Histology Lab Assistant

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Receives and sorts specimens and assists with detailed specimen handling; packages and tracks specimens for transport and performs specimen storage and retrieval.
 Performs limited testing under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) 1988 guidelines, according to established policies and procedures.
 Performs laboratory result entry in the computer system. Enters and verifies test requests into the laboratories' computer system. Notifies providers of stat, critical, and other abnormal results and exceptions as defined by policy and procedure.
 Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and makes minor repairs when needed. Runs quality control checks. 
 Reviews new lot/new shipment on testing in areas of oversight to ensure QC performed as needed.
 Processes specimens for testing, including aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments, while maintaining proper specimen identification.
 Assists Supervisor with workflow improvement, dept. projects and implementation of system initiatives, where appropriate.
 Assists supervisor and technical specialist in inspection preparedness. Familiar with CAP checklist items that pertain to their duties in the areas of their oversight.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

License/Registration/Certification Required: n/aEducation Required: High school diploma or equivalentExperience Required: Typically requires 3 years of experience in related laboratory functions.

Demonstrates knowledge and experience in laboratory functionsDemonstrates knowledge of medical termsBasic computer skills including experience using computer software applicationsKeyboarding and typing skillsExcellent verbal and written communication skillsAbility to work in a fast-paced environment and to handle multiple tasks simultaneouslyDemonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees
