DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES: 

Prepares microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic/research purposesPerforms tissue stains to assist in diagnosisHandles specimen accessioning.  Reviews quality control, performs operational duties, of histology instruments and equipment.Operates and performs maintenance/troubleshooting on analyzers and instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing, impregnation with paraffin, cutting tissue sections, staining of slidesWorks accurately according to procedure manual and supervisor’s instructions.Verifies proper specimen/test/patient identification.Enters orders, documents on logs/worksheets and performs result entry.Correctly records and processes specimens.Maintains competencies for all assigned procedures. Takes responsibility for completion of daily routine duties assigned to work area.Investigates and resolves pending and incomplete work, clerical and technical discrepancies.Understands and retains knowledge of department procedures.Assists with departmental projects and management support (ex. department supply inventory and chemical exposure monitoring).Investigates computer problems and resolves or reports to appropriate personnel.Functions responsibly in the absence of supervisory personnel..Minimizes waste of supplies and equipment.Is able to organize and complete several tasks simultaneously without loss of accuracy.Productivity remains constant under pressures associated with the job.Uses available time productively, contributing to department needs and/or cross-training.Provides back-up coverage for procedures relating to Tissue Laboratory and Autopsy Services.Correlates physiological and psychological differences created by age, sex, and abilities to appropriate components of client, co-worker interactions.Reports to work as scheduled, in accordance with hospital policy, and takes responsibility to prevent absences and tardiness.Demonstrates a consistently well-organized approach to all activities.Complies with hospital policy regarding breaks and lunch periods.Follows established hospital procedures for clients and/or patient requests.Practices appropriate safety and infection control procedures.Maintains clean and safe work areas.Reports safety hazards to appropriate personnel immediately.Accepts work assignment readilySupports all Lab and Hospital structural standards (i.e. policies, procedures and regulations)Provides proper identification in personal and phone communicationsRespects the patient’s right to privacy by only discussing clinically relevant information in appropriate surrounding.Responds to difficult situations with self-control and positive attitude.Communicates with co-workers with clarity and respectShares responsibilities and willingly offers assistance to co-workers.Recognizes and acknowledges the contribution of each department/specialty. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

                       Current histology certification, Histology Technician (HT) or Histology Technologist (HTL).

Preferred:

                        Two years of histology lab experience in an acute care setting.

Description

Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed acute-care hospital classified as a stroke receiving center and level 2 trauma facility with an innovative, patient centered and evidence-based Rehabilitation Services Department.  Our compassionate team provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement & spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, Telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, as well as outpatient therapy, hand and lymphedema clinics.

GENERAL DUTIES:

Performs various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. Assists the pathologists and Histology Supervisor as directed. Ensures that all equipment is in proper working condition. Helps manage inventory and supplies. Maintains quality control programs and corrective actions. Meets regulatory requirements and inspection standards. Understands the physiological and psychological differences created by age, sex, and abilities and applies them to the preanalytic, analytic, and postanalytic components of laboratory testing.

Conducts all related duties as a professional member of the health care team. Is responsible for adherence and enforcement of all Hospital and Laboratory department policies, to include those intended to prevent the accidental and unnecessary exposure of self/patient or other employees to safety hazards.
