Histology Technician

Position Summary

Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologist. Prepares tissue for immediate examination using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount, and stain tissue specimens received from surgery.

Primary Position Responsibilities

1.

Prepares (embed and cut) high quality histologic slides quickly and accurately from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologist.

2.

Prepares high quality sections of tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing plus frozen section techniques to freeze, cut, mount, and stain tissue specimens received from surgery.

3.

Skillfully operates laboratory equipment used to process specimens, and performs daily and weekly maintenance of histology equipment.

4.

Prepares slides of specimens using special and immunohistochemical stains, using appropriate controls and achieving high quality results.

5.

Examines slides under microscope to make sure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements

6.

Prepares specimens, slides, or blocks to send to reference laboratory for specialized testing and studies.

7.

Performs quality control testing of reagents and antibodies for immunochemical staining procedures and other classes of stains.

8.

Picks up and accessions specimens for gross examination by pathologist.

9.

May be required to assist in cytology specimen collection and sendout.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

Required:

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Preferred:

Certificate in Histo Technology from an accredited school


Minimum Years of Experience (Amount, Type and Variation):

Required:

3 years hospital Histology Technician experience if High School Diploma or Equivalent.  Prior work experience not required for Certificate as a HT from an accredited school.

Must be ASCP eligible

Preferred:

At least one year as a Histology Technician in a hospital setting and completion of histology technician school


License, Registry or Certification:

Required:

ASCP Histo-Technology (HT) certification within 1 year of hire

Preferred:

Current ASCP Histo-Technology (HT) certification


Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:

Required:

Basic Microsoft Office, Google, and LIS computer skills. Personnel skills.
