Job DescriptionThe histology specialist will be responsible for preparing tissue samples for microscopic analysis.
ResponsibilitiesReceiving and sorting specimens: Logging and prioritizing specimens from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy casesEmbedding: Surrounding tissue with paraffin wax to prepare for cuttingCutting: Using a microtome or cryostat to cut thin slices of tissueMounting: Placing the tissue on a slideStaining: Using dyes to emphasize abnormalitiesMaintaining equipment: Performing preventative and corrective maintenance on laboratory instrumentsQuality control: Ensuring the quality of the tissue samples and the accuracy of the resultsFollowing hospital and laboratory safety standardsData entry: Entering patient information, orders, and other data into the laboratory information systemCommunication: Coordinating with physicians and other staff to ensure the workflow runs smoothlyEssential SkillsHistologyStainingASCP certificationTissue sample preparationImmunohistochemistryAccessioningPathology lab experienceAdditional Skills & QualificationsAssociate’s Degree in a science-related field is a plus2-4 years of histology experienceHT/HTL ASCP certification or completion of Histology Technician training course and eligibility to sit for the exam is requiredCertification required within 1 year of hireWork Environment
This position is based in an office/lab environment. The work involves handling laboratory equipment and following safety standards.
