Histotechnician

As a certified Histotechnician, you play a vital role in unraveling the mysteries of the human body preparing slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s) and assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease. Performing daily histopathology procedures under general supervision, you’re responsible for instrument maintenance, tissue sectioning, reagent preparation, tissue fixation procedure and processing, bone cutting, special staining, cutting and embedding of tissues, electron microscopy processing and assisting with autopsies.

Your Everyday 

Coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures and the surgery schedule. 

Prepare routine and non-routine slides for microscopic evaluation, as directed. 

Process specimens delivered from various departments when delivered to the laboratory.  

Perform embedding and microtomy under general supervision. 

Ensure appropriate accessioning, labeling and processing of all tissue samples. 

Prepare solutions, stains (routine, special or IHC), and reagents in accordance with standard written procedures. 

Operate and maintain all histology area lab equipment in proper state of readiness and cleanliness. 

Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting. 

Process and ship specimens to referral laboratories. 

Obtain the required documents and accession patient. 

Provide support with autopsy procedures as required. 

Set-up equipment and gather supplies needed for the specimen collection and procedure and participate in the maintenance of adequate inventory of supplies and reagents. 

Comply with hospital/laboratory safety and infection control additional policies and procedures, which contribute to the efficiency, safety and integrity of the department and report safety incidents to the supervisor. 

 
The Must-Haves 
 
Minimum: 
 

Associate degree from an accredited college or university, and/or fulfillment of the educational requirements necessary for qualification to sit for a Histotechnology National Certification Examination  
OR 

Associate degree from an accredited college or university, and/or fulfillment of the educational requirements necessary for qualification to sit for a Histotechnology National Certification Examination
