Under the direction of a pathologist or a qualified medicalprofessional, prepares human tissue and bodily fluid specimens by treating thespecimens with chemicals, slicing and mounting on glass slides for microscopicexamination and analysis by the pathologist. Preparation process may include sectioning, reagent and other treatment,slide placement, and dying. Places specimens using fixation, dehydration,clearing and/or impregnation by embedding, in a suitable media. Uses judgmentto adapt for tissue types, uses chemicals and dyes to stain sections in orderto demonstrate various pathological conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs specimen collection, accessioning, and loggingroutines May be responsible to make scheduled rounds within thefacility to pick up surgical specimens Checks each specimen for criteria of acceptability, assuringproper patient identification, specimen integrity and appropriate paperwork Records the receipt of specimens and assigns identificationnumber according to department and/or facility protocol Refers any problem specimen to the area of collection andinforms the supervisor Assists pathologists with tissue grossing procedures;prepares the tissue grossing area Maintains and assures specimen identification by correctlylabeling cassettes and maintains workflow in concert with the pathologist Cleans the workstation after completing grossing procedures.Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during cleanupto minimize exposure risks Processes, embeds and sections tissues for slides Embeds processed tissue, cuts embedded tissue for slidesections; performs routine and special stains according to departmentprocedures in preparation for analysis by the pathologist May prepare frozen-section slides for frozen-sectiondiagnosis by the pathologist Routinely conducts highly specialized histochemical andhisto-pathological laboratory tests for use in the diagnosis and treatment ofdisease; records test results for review by physicians Prepares and maintains equipment used for all types oftissue processing, embedding, cutting and mounting, labeling, recording andverifying the quality of slides delivered to pathologist Sets up equipment, instruments and apparatus for specificlaboratory procedures May perform preventive maintenance and quality controlprocedures on the lab equipment May provide technical assistance and training to laboratorypersonnel as required Observes all facility and laboratory policies and safetypractices; maintains a safe, clean and prepared work area Adheres to all Amergis and worksite rules, policies andprocedures Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:
