Histotechnologist
The Histotechnologist assesses and processes pathology specimens. Embeds processed tissue, cuts the blocks embedded, stains and coverslips the slides. Delivers prepared slides and corresponding slips and special staining as requested or assigned. Assist with the implementation of new procedures. Will assume supervisory duties in the absence of the supervisor. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S): + Must be licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Certified Histological Technician by the New York State Education Department. + Baccalaureate degree in Histotechnology or related science field. + Must possess high degree of accuracy, exhibit responsible behavior. + Must possess good communication skills and be able to work independently. + Able to serve the needs of patients ages neonatal to geriatric. + Demonstrate leadership skills + Be able to write procedures and train staff as needed. + Able to deal with all types of customers in a pleasant, professional manner. + Able to perform assigned duties in a timely manner with moderate supervision. + Able to maintain the appropriate function of the section when required. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION: + Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures. + Embed processed tissue in paraffin. + Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples. + Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting + Perform microtomy of embedded tissue. + Perform gross tissue examination and description of small and simple specimens. + Ensure Proper tissue processing + Provide assistance to the pathologist in performing frozen sections. + Prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining. + Perform all special stain procedures: + Prepare solutions and reagents used for special stains + Obtain and validate control material used in special stains + May perform IHC testing and staining: + Prepare solutions and reagents for IHC procedures + Obtain and validate control material used in IHC procedures. + Perform coverslipping of stained slides either manually or automated. + Adhere to laboratory's quality control policies, and documents all quality control activities; has the ability to recognize outliers and correct them. + Register surgical Specimens + Perform filing of finished blocks and slides. + Maintains stock and working solutions of stains and reagents. + Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment. Instrumentation is maintained in working condition. Maintenance is performed independently. Able to troubleshoot equipment problems. + Provide training and guidance to Histotechnicians/Histotechnologists, students and lab aides. Acts as section representative for education purposes + Primary Instrument Operator: Will perform sophisticated maintenance and troubleshooting procedures. Validation studies completed. Procedures written. Staff trained. + Assist with Annual Competency Assessments + Differentiate acceptable and unacceptable processing, embedding, cutting and staining of tissue specimens. Capable of identifying problems that may affect test performance or reporting of test results and resolve or immediately report to histology supervisor, technical supervisor, or director. + Working with the supervisor, ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, NYSDOH, and CAP regulations. + Capable of providing coverage in the absence of the histology supervisor or lead Histotechnologist. + Maintain a clean and well-organized work area. + Other duties, as assigned by the supervisor. + Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to mandatory education, annual health assessment, and licensure verification. Salary Range: $ 22.28-32.31 /hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
