The Assistant Horticulturist will perform general horticulture duties within The Spheres and/or Greenhouse.

Reports to the JLL Horticulturist III

Primary Duties / Essential Job

Functions

As a member of the Global Real Estate & Facilities (GREF) team this position will be responsible for assisting with the day-to-day horticultural operations of The Spheres and/or Redmond Greenhouse and other horticultural aspects of Amazon’s Seattle-based Corporate Headquarters. This includes maintenance of interior plant installations and exterior landscape. The successful candidate is a self-starter who must be comfortable operating on both strategic and tactical levels, simultaneously acting as an internal ambassador, educator, and implementer.

The optimal candidate is an experienced and vibrant professional who excels within an entrepreneurial culture – providing vision, leadership, and communication – but not afraid to dive into details. Having passion and in-depth knowledge of the horticultural world is critical. This individual also has experience in maintaining high quality interior and exterior plant displays.

Essential Functions:

Perform general horticulture maintenance within the Greenhouse, including watering, planting, weeding, irrigation, pest control, and pruning, under direction of the supervisory HorticulturistAssist Horticulturists with projects such as terrariums, living walls, plant propagationAssist with the cultivation and transfer of plant material to and from the Spheres and other locations via motor vehicleCollaborate with Horticulturist and Amazon staff on interior and exterior horticulture projectsPerforms regular horticulture-focused tours of the facility for guestsAssisting team by identifying deficits and notifying management to correct issues

Other Functions:

Assists with plant procurement and acquisitions in accordance with the Amazon plant collection policyAttends trainings and professional development opportunities as directed by supervisorsCarry out other duties as assigned by supervisors

Experience / Skills

Essential Physical Capabilities:

Meet highest attendance and punctuality requirementsAbility to work weekends, as needed, per operational needsDetect emergency alarms - auditory and/or visualValid Driver’s licenseComfortable working at heights of over 30 ft.Ability to work under different climatic conditions (e.g., high heat and humidity) and to lift up to 50 lbs.

Knowledge of tropical and temperate plantsBasic knowledge of plant nutrition, managing water quality, and greenhouse climate control systemsKnowledge of science-based horticultural practices including integrated pest management (IPM)Ability to recognize pest and disease issues in the landscapeAbility and interest in multi-tasking and working independently with a teamInteract with employees, visitors, and contractors with professionalism and diplomacyApply science-based thinking and problem solving and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization existsAbility to operate personal computer, software as appropriate for project and all other office equipmentAdvanced competence with a variety of software including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and other requested software programsInterpret instructions in written, oral, and diagrammatic or schedule formPossess initiative to assume additional responsibilitiesSet priorities and meet deadlinesCommunicate effectively in both verbal and written formatsPossess excellent grammatical and proofreading abilities

Experience:

Conservatory/greenhouse experienceIntegrated Pest Management experience

Education

Certification or Associate’s Degree in a related field or equivalent experienceMinimum 2 years’ experience in horticulture, living architecture, or greenhouse plant production

Estimated total compensation for this position:

58,200.00 – 84,400.00 USD per year

The total compensation range is an estimate and not guaranteed. An employment offer is based on an applicant's education, experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, internal equity and alignment with market data .
