Hospitalist, Intensive Care Unit - VCA Canada, Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital

Location: Victoria, BC

Job Class: Part Time & Full Time

VCA Canada Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital, located in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia on the West Coast, is seeking a part-time Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Hospitalist to join our dedicated team. This unique opportunity is ideal for a veterinarian who wants to focus on small animal intensive care, working alongside critical care Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) and supported by board-certified emergency and critical care specialists.

Our ICU is a purpose-built facility located next to the Emergency Service, staffed by a team of dedicated, highly skilled critical care technicians. The goal of this new position is to maintain the highest standard of care for critically ill patients, 7 days a week, by having a dedicated ICU presence.

Opportunities exist for full- or part-time work, and while the exact schedule is flexible, it will include either every weekend or every other weekend in ICU, with the potential for Friday day shifts. This creates flexible opportunities for both full-time and part-time roles, and ICU and Emergency work, depending on individual preferences. You could work exclusively in the ICU on weekends or split your time with at least 50% of weekends in ICU and additional shifts in the Emergency Service.

This position complements the expert care provided by our board-certified critical care specialists (DACVECCs) during the week, and supports the Emergency Service, allowing them to focus on incoming cases. The ECC specialists will remain available for guidance and support.

The position offers an excellent opportunity for a veterinarian interested in deepening their understanding of critical care and the pathophysiology of critical illness. You will work with patients suffering from a unique mix of respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic issues. While the work can be intense, the ICU environment is slower paced than the emergency service, with a focus on meticulous patient management and compassionate communication with highly invested pet owners.

We offer 24-hour referral and emergency services with state-of-the-art veterinary care. Our hospital includes specialists in Critical Care, Neurology, Surgery, Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Oncology (Surgical, Medical, and Radiation), Diagnostic Imaging, and Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Our dynamic team fosters a collaborative and supportive work environment where the primary focus is delivering world-class veterinary services and patient care.

Qualifications:

A veterinary degree eligible for registration with the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia (CVBC)

Experience with ICU procedures, such as fluid resuscitation, blood transfusions, use of vasopressors, arrhythmia management, CPR, fluid therapy, and advanced patient monitoring.

Expertise in managing patients with sepsis, circulatory shock, respiratory distress, and severe acid-base, electrolyte, and coagulation disorders

Natural ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team of technicians, emergency veterinarians, and specialists

Strong communication skills

Responsibilities:

Work collaboratively to build a positive, kind and respectful workplace culture

Provide comprehensive care for patients in the ICU (both primary ICU and those of other specialties) including reviewing patient history, conducting exams, and managing diagnostic and therapeutic plans, and performing procedures
