The Opportunity:
The Human Resources Associate is responsible for providing day-to-day HR support and administering essential HR processes for the Mahrt Mill. This position requires a dedicated, and detail-oriented individual who will be a crucial member of our Human Resources team and will interact daily with our unionized hourly workforce.
How you will impact Smurfit WestRock:
• Manage the annual processes as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement for both the Mahrt Paper Mill and Cottonton Sawmill.
• Process and maintain all electronic and paper HR records in HRIS, including managing and entering all hourly HR transactions for hires, transfers, and terminations, and maintaining records and confidential employee files, providing statistical and regulatory reporting.
• Support departments with the payroll process. This includes any weekly, monthly, or year-end duties.
• Support third party benefit administration including FMLA, STD and Unemployment claims for both hourly and salaried and handle accordingly.
• Work closely with other HR roles to support the full life cycle of the hourly talent acquisition process which includes coordinating and facilitating orientation for both hourly and salaried new hires.
• Generate and distribute regular HR reports to relevant stakeholders.
• Maintain all related recordkeeping in accordance with our company record retention guidelines, which include the hourly and salaried employee personnel records.
• Work closely with other HR roles to resolve employee issues including Labor Relations
• Assist with annual benefits enrollment, various HR and local initiatives, and provide support as needed for the HR department.
• Provide excellent customer service to employees, addressing their HR-related inquiries and concerns in a prompt manner.
• Responsible for conducting business with integrity and respect, being accountable, and actively pursuing excellence to help achieve Smurfit WestRock goals.
• Provide ownership and track attendance and delivery of attendance feedback. (e.g. feedback and disciplinary action if needed).
• Active participation in the Operational Excellence and Safety initiatives.
• Other duties as assigned.
What you need to succeed:
• Bachelor’s degree in human resources, or related discipline is required
• Experience with employee databases, HRIS and/or learning management systems is preferred (PeopleSoft, Avature, Workforce Software, MS Office products).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships.
• Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills
• Must be flexible to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and opportunities.
• Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple, detailed tasks.
• Possess drive and initiative to go above and beyond to achieve goals while collaborating in a team environment.
