BASIC FUNCTION:
The HR Business Partner for the University of Rhode Island serves as a strategic consultant and trusted advisor to assigned colleges and units across the University. This role partners with academic and administrative leaders to align human resources practices with institutional priorities, support organizational effectiveness, and foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture. The HR Business Partner is responsible for delivering innovative HR solutions, addressing workforce challenges, and serving as a liaison between the central HR office and campus units. You will provide a broad array of human resource consultative services in the areas of organizational and job design, academic appointments, recruitment, retention, compensation, performance management, employee relations, data analytics, diversity and inclusion, and staff development to employees and managers. In everything you do, you will assess alignment between HR interventions and objectives, the URI strategic plan, URI policies, CBAs, and integration of diversity, equity and inclusion considerations.
Duties and Responsibilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Partnering:
Build strong working relationships with campus leaders to understand their goals, challenges, and workforce needs, in order to be a proactive partner for them. Collaborate with leadership to develop and implement HR strategies that align with the University’s mission and strategic plan. Provide data-driven insights and recommendations on workforce planning, employee engagement, and talent management.
Employee Relations and Conflict Resolution:
Serve as a trusted resource for resolving workplace issues, coaching leaders, and fostering a culture of respect and collaboration. Provide guidance on general employee relations, performance management, and disciplinary actions in alignment with the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), University policies and applicable laws.
Change Management and Organizational Development:
Guide leaders and teams through organizational changes, including restructures, layoffs, new initiatives, and process improvements. Conduct assessments to identify opportunities for enhancing organizational effectiveness and culture. Facilitate workshops, training sessions, and team-building activities to support professional growth and collaboration.
HR Administration and Compliance:
Act as a liaison between campus units and central HR to ensure consistent application of HR policies and procedures, including providing policy interpretation. Provide general guidance on compensation, benefits, leave management, and other HR functions. Ensure compliance with university policies, state and federal employment laws including ADA and FMLA, and collective bargaining agreements.
Promote DEI principles in all HR practices, ensuring equitable treatment and access for all employees.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform other duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, HRIS, database management and spreadsheet software.
Required Qualifications REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s degree.
Minimum of five years of progressively responsible HR experience (including experience in an HR generalist or business partner role).
Strong knowledge of HR practices, employment laws, and regulations.
Demonstrated ability to build trust and collaborate effectively with diverse groups at all levels of an organization.
Exceptional problem-solving, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to assess stakeholder needs.
Proven success in human resource management skills (including employee relations, performance management, compensation, operational management, ensuring appropriate resolutions to complex challenges).
Knowledge of labor relations and experience navigating complex employee issues in a unionized environment.
Committed to and have a proven track record of delivering outstanding customer service.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with tact and discretion, commitment to ethical workplace practices.
Ability to establish individual priorities, demonstrate initiative and self-direction to follow through on all areas of responsibility with minimal direct supervision.
Experience generating reports, using HR data and analytics to inform decision-making.
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
Preferred Qualifications PREFERRED:
Master’s degree in human resources, organizational development, or a related field.
PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification.
Experience in higher education or large, complex organizations.
Proficiency with HRIS systems and data analytics tools.
