The GATX summer intern program is a paid 13-week internship from May – August. The HR Intern will collaborate closely with the HR Manager, shadowing them to learn HR management principles while concentrating on a specific area rather than specialized skill sets. This hands-on experience will allow the intern to apply classroom knowledge and skills to defined projects and learn about HR management fundamentals and strategic initiatives from GATX professionals.
Responsibilities
Project Management
Managing defined projects that support the HR Manager and HR team Coordinating project timelines and deliverables Ensuring projects align with HR goals and objectivesHR Administration
Supporting day-to-day HR operations Assisting with employee inquiries and requests Helping with the preparation of HR reports and documentsEmployee Records Management
Maintaining and updating employee records Assisting with data entry and filing Ensuring confidentiality and accuracy of employee informationRecruitment Support
Assisting with job postings and advertisements Screening resumes and applications Scheduling interviews and coordinating with candidatesOnboarding
Helping with the preparation of onboarding materials Assisting in the orientation process for new hires Ensuring all necessary paperwork is completedTraining and Development
Coordinating training sessions and workshops Assisting in the development of training materials Tracking and reporting on training progressEmployee Engagement
Assisting in organizing employee events and activities Supporting employee recognition programs Gathering feedback from employees to improve engagement initiativesUnion Interaction and Grievance Process Involvement
Assisting with union interactions and communications Supporting the grievance process and resolution efforts QualificationsEducation and/or Experience Required:
Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related fieldCumulative GPA of 2.5 or higherExperience with HR software and systems preferredCompetence with Microsoft Office including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel
Key Competencies:
Verbal and written communication and documentation skillsDetail orientation and organizational skillsProblem-solving and basic trouble-shooting abilityAbility to handle multiple tasks
Other:
Ability to work full-time during the summer of 2025Physical ability to participate in HR activities in an office setting
As of February 10, 2025, the salary range for this position is $20 to $24 per hour. This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
