Job Description
The Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness (CHECW) seeks to eliminate racial and other inequities resulting in premature mortality. With an unwavering grounding in history and structural analysis, CHECW works to increase visibility of the harm perpetuated by centuries of racist, socially unjust policy while pushing towards redress for the most impacted NYC communities. CHECW addresses inequity across community and healthcare systems in partnership with community, faith-based, and health care organizations. CHECW's work focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial determinants, and addresses both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well being of New Yorkers. CHECW is comprised of the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, The Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, the Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building, the Bureau of Equitable Health Systems and the Bureau of Finance, Administration and Services. Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health: Formerly known as the Brooklyn Neighborhood Action Centers, the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health will continue to provide oversight and leadership in programming and planning for the Brownsville Neighborhood Health Action Center with satellite programming and planning also occurring at the Bedford and Bushwick District Health Offices.
This bureau will support programming, planning and research opportunities to address racial inequities resulting in premature mortality in Central Brooklyn. Healthy Start Brooklyn (HSB) and the Citywide Doula Initiative (CDI) work to reduce inequities in birth outcomes in neighborhoods that face elevated social and health burdens, as a result of decades of structural racism and disinvestment. Both programs provide professional, no-cost doula services, HSB also provides health education and parenting support for families in central and eastern Brooklyn. The Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health seeks to hire a HSB-CDI Health Education Coordinator to oversee the development and provision of supportive services for doula clients and other community residents.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
- Coordinate scheduling and registration for all HSB and CDI classes, including childbirth education (in English and Spanish), newborn care, infant safety/CPR, Family Foundations (for couples), ROSE (to prevent postpartum depression), and Before and After Birth: Protecting Your Emotional Health.
- Conduct outreach and recruitment, including through tabling, distribution of flyers, and other means; monitor registrations from Eventbrite, email, HSB's toll-free number, and the online enrollment form; send out Zoom links, handouts, and other resources.
- Complete set-up for in-person and virtual classes, including securing physical location and creating Zoom registrations; attend in-person classes to support as needed.
- Draft and distribute the monthly Healthy Start Brooklyn Activities Calendar of classes and events to referrers.
- Work with the Health Department's Family Wellness Suites (FWS) to develop additional support services, including nutrition, preconception-health, and prenatal-exercise classes; Meet the Doula events; and classes in other languages.
- Work to expand classes to other neighborhoods served by the Citywide Doula Initiative.
- Recruit instructors, trainers, etc., ideally from among residents of the neighborhoods being served.
- Draft contracts for instructors and other vendors, review and process invoices, and monitor instructor compliance with training and certification requirements.
- Maintain regular communication with instructors, including hosting quarterly instructors' meetings, to meet individual needs and integrate all classes into a seamless education program.
- Compile and analyze quantitative and qualitative data on classes and activities, including demographic data on participants; make recommendations for improving services and increasing attendance.
- Assist with the transition to the Apricot database, especially as it relates to the education program.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Strong understanding of and commitment to birth equity
- Experience working with community members and organizations
- Experience providing instruction in perinatal support, through childbirth education, parenting, or similar classes
- Understanding of and experience around community development and health issues in urban, underserved neighborhoods
- Comfortable working in a community setting with diverse populations
- Strong coordination and organizational skills
- Detail oriented; able to manage projects and work independently
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and excellent customer-service skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Fluency in Spanish a plus

Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
