The HVAC Technician (HVAC Tech SR) at Utah State University is responsible for maintaining and enhancing campus HVAC Control systems. The Senior Technician coordinates projects and leads teams, while the Journeyman & Apprentice supports maintenance, repair, and installation tasks. Both roles require technical expertise, effective communication, and a proactive attitude to ensure efficient system operations.  This position will be hired at either the HVAC Technician Apprentice, Journeyman, or Senior level based upon duties assigned and qualifications - please see the Qualifications section.

Responsibilities

HVAC Controls Technician Apprentice: 

Inventory Management: Monitor, order, and maintain supplies and equipment.Customer Service: Check in with customers and follow up to ensure their needs are met.Troubleshooting and Repairs: Assist in diagnosing and fixing HVAC controls and systems.Preventive Maintenance: Perform regular inspections and maintenance on control systems.System Installation: Help install and replace HVAC components and control systems.Commissioning: Assist in commissioning buildings by performing point-to-point checkouts and balancing HVAC control systems.Programming Controls: Aid in programming control systems for new and remodeled installations.Team Support: Support technicians and commissioning teams with projects.Software Installation: Help install and program control system software on shop computers.Work Site Maintenance: Clean equipment, shop areas, and work sitesMiscellaneous Duties: Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.

HVAC Controls Journeyman Technician:

All responsibilities of an Apprentice Control Technician.Advanced Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair complex HVAC controls and systems.Preventive Maintenance: Conduct inspections and maintenance on control systems.Commissioning: Ensure the building's HVAC systems are balanced and fully functional.Project Coordination: Prepare estimates, coordinate projects, and ensure timely completion.Leadership: Guide and train other technicians in procedures and techniques.Administrative Oversight: Participate in overseeing shop functions and commissioning projects.Control Systems Evaluation: Ensure cost-effective operation of control systems.Safety and Maintenance: Promote workplace safety and proper equipment maintenance.Programming Controls: Program control systems for new and remodeled systems.Technical Support: Assist with departmental projects and problem-solving.IT Coordination: Work with campus IT on control system security issues.Planning and Design Review: Collaborate on new building and remodel project reviews.Testing Procedure Development: Develop and maintain testing procedures for shop personnel.Work Site Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness of equipment, shop areas, and work sites.Miscellaneous Duties: Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

This position will be hired at either the HVAC Technician Apprentice, Journeyman, or Senior level based upon duties assigned and qualifications:Minimum of 2 years in HVAC/Refrigeration, electronics, or programming to qualify for Apprentice Controls Technician.Minimum of 4 years in HVAC/refrigeration, electronics, or programming to qualify for Journeyman Controls Tech. Minimum of 6 years in HVAC/Refrigeration, electronics, or programming to qualify for Senior Controls TechnicianTechnical Skills: Proficiency in computer use, reading blueprints, and schematics. Control Systems Knowledge in one or more of the following: Johnson Controls, Phoenix, Struxureware, and/or INet.Ongoing Training: Commitment to staying current with trade advancements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Comprehensive understanding of HVAC control systems and equipment. Expertise in HVAC Controls system maintenance, repair, and installation. Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydronic, and steam systems. Ability to balance HVAC systems and use relevant test equipment. Proficiency in troubleshooting and solving complex HVAC issues. Strong project estimation and material procurement skills. Capability to read and interpret building blueprints and schematics. Required Documents
