HVAC Work Leader
This is an “appointed” designation and comes with a” wage adder” to the base wage of the person filing the job that is determined by the University.  The University may, at any time, with or without notice, remove a person from this assignment.
 
The Group Leader/Auxiliary Leader assists the Supervisor in the day to day operation of the department. This includes planning, organizing, coordinating and leading throughout the work day. The appointee works closely with all team members facilitating the Supervisor’s leadership. The appointee will also take on a supervisory role when the department supervisor is on vacation or not otherwise present on the job. The appointee must be available for call in, overtime and on call duty. The appointee will also take on special tasks or projects at the direction of the Supervisor.   

This position is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all heating, ventilation, plumbing, electrical, pneumatic, and DDC equipment on campus. Must be available for overtime and on call situations. Ability to lift 50+ pounds. This position has been evaluated for compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and is subject to premium pay for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a payroll week. 

Salary/Rate: $26.45;  40 hours per week

Qualifications-Education & Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Formal Education:Technical degree preferred, or equivalent experience in steam boilers, electrical, hot water and steam heating and air conditioning systemsExperience:​​​​​​​Three years of experience in operation and maintenance of low pressure boilers, electric, air conditioning, ventilation and plumbingAdditional Knowledge/Skills:​​​​​​​Ability to run and understand various types of equipment, including, but not limited to, welders, torches, pipe-threaders, drills, grinders, man-lifts, fork lifts, multi-purpose meters and computersMust have a working knowledge of applicable regulatory code (fire, electrical, boiler, etc.)Must be able to read electrical and mechanical blue printsMust be able to be trained in confined spaces, lockout-tag out, fall protection, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous waste, and forklift, respirator useEssential Functions:​​​​​​​With or without reasonable accommodations the incumbent must be able to read and write and speak the English language at a college levelBe capable of performing sometimes complex mathematical calculations, statistical calculations and other higher mathematical operationsMust be able to communicate with all levels of the institution in written and spoken formThe individual must be able to work independentlyThe ability to maintain regular and prompt attendance is essential to the successful performance of this positionOther essential functions may be requiredPhysical Environment:​​​​​​​Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when requiredA respiratory function test and the ability to use respirators may be requiredStairs and uneven surfaces may be present; Artificial lifts, etc. may or may not be availableThe position may require the incumbent to walk outdoors in all types of weather to other buildings or offices located on the campusThe Campus is located in an area that contains numerous hills and slopes and may not always be fully accessible for mobility impaired individualsLeader Responsibilities:Help disseminate Supervisor’s directions to all members of the teamAssist Supervisor in day to day activities as neededProvide continuity of leadership during Supervisors absenceHelp Supervisor maintain job quality in the field and report issues and problems to the SupervisorMaintain inventory control and distribution to team membersTake on a lead role for special events or projectsFill in for any employee not able to come to work or on vacationHelp out any team member as needed for large or complex tasksBe on call and available in case of an urgent problem or issueEnsure safety protocols are being followed in the field and report any deficiencies to the SupervisorAssist with management of any Sub Contractor in the fieldTrain new employees and existing employees in the fieldAdditional Responsibilities:Maintain all equipment in good working orderMonitor, operate and trouble shoot campus-wide energy management systemsReplace and rewire energy management system devicesOperate and maintain stand-alone boilers both steam and hot waterRepair and replace various HVAC systemsDo both minor and major plumbing repairs and installationWire motors, motor starters, relays, contactors, and other electrical devicesTroubleshoot, repair and replace electrical devices, such as bulbs, ballasts, wiring, switches, outlets, and breakers; install new lightingRead and understand building blue prints for mechanical systems, plumbing and electrical lay-outRead and understand electrical schematicsTest and troubleshoot electronic, computerized fire alarm devicesTest emergency electrical generatorsAnalyze and handle any emergency or maintenance problems that occurSupervise student workersMaintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment Safety: Participate in safety training and comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocolsPerform additional duties and assist with special projects as assignedAbout Alfred University:
