Position Overview:

The Plus+ Mentoring Team is a group-based mentoring program that helps young & emerging adults transform the attitudes and behaviors that led to their involvement with the criminal justice system by developing positive and appropriate relationships and supporting them in making safe decisions in the community. The team is made up of a full-time Program Coordinator and 3 part-time Credible Messenger mentors. Young people will come together twice weekly as a cohort of up to 16 youth, ages 13-18, with the Plus+ Mentoring team supporting them. The Credible Messenger mentors will utilize the Power Source Curriculum & Mindfulness practices to support the youth to examine their feelings, evaluate their own behaviors and develop strategies for change. Young people will also meet their mentors and the Program Coordinator on an ad hoc basis throughout the week for one-on-one mentoring as well as for support with case management services. Position is 12 hours a week over the course of five days and some weekends (if required). The purpose of the program is not only to reduce recidivism, but to encourage changes in thinking, access to community resources, positive adult & peer relationships and a supportive and safe environment to promote appropriate emotional and transformative growth.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum 3–5-year experience working with at-risk youth. Bachelors Preferred. Demonstrate initiative and creativity, particularly with adolescents. Demonstrate experience in group work. Demonstrate understanding of the issues of the local Manhattan (Harlem) community. Demonstrate understanding of the issues facing Black and Latino adolescents. Ability to work as a team member and independently. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with youth and staff. Demonstrate ability to effectively use a multi-cultural approach in working with special needs youth. Excellent oral communication skills. Demonstrate knowledge in juvenile justice system. Demonstrate knowledge in Anti-Gun violence. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
