Implant Coordinator

Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Sterile Processing Manager this position works directly with SPD, OR, Infection Control, Case Cart staff, and Vendors. The Implant Coordinator uses their skills and knowledge to establish and maintain acceptable inventory levels of owned and consigned implants. Arranges for loaner implants and instruments when indicated by patient care requirements to meet the needs of all surgical patients. Working with Surgical Services Leadership, Purchasing and the OR Liaison to recognize new consignment needs and evaluate existing consignment in place to ensure usage continues to support current inventory. Works with the OR staff to review the surgical schedule in advance to anticipate the need for implants and loaned instrumentation. Communicates with vendors to ensure all needs for surgical patients are met. Incumbent receives, inventories, and accounts for tray usage of loaned instruments and implants according to Renowns policy.

Nature and Scope

This position directs processes for determining customer needs, prioritization of work and interface team responsibilities. Provides updates to Surgical Services Leadership and other team members, as needed, on project progress and status of outstanding requests. Position works closely with Surgical Services Leadership on activities concerning the developing of optimal workflows, computer requirements, documentation guidelines and appropriate distribution of implants and instrumentation. The position provides technical skills as a member of the vendor implant/instrument team, communicating with SPD staff, OR Staff, Vendors, Infection Control, Case Carts and escalates to leadership as needed. Communicates and escalates and patient safety concerns or surgical delays in a timely manner. Offers education for Vendors, Providers, SPD and OR staff as needed for surgical instrumentation and processes. Participates as part of the Implant team to ensure each tray and instrument meets the accreditation standards to ensure that items are safe to use on patients and the process of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization are properly executed and documented. Inspect each instrument tray and item for defective, broken, contaminated, missing or extra items and communicate finding to Vendors and Surgical Services Leadership as needed. This position will assist in ensuring all Vendors follow Renown Health Policies and Procedures for processing and accepting loaner instrumentation. Communicating any concerns to Surgical Services Leadership and having Vendors correct any concerns prior to scheduled needs of surgical patients. Assist Vendors with missing or broken instrumentation after the case to minimize the financial impact of lost or broken inventory. Maintain and assist in replacing missing instruments or implants in owned and consigned trays as needed.

The demands on this position will be very dynamic because of rapid changes in medical procedures that are occurring. Technical knowledge will be needed in process development, implementation and monitoring, implants & instrumentation, policies & procedures, physicians preferences for implant and instrument trays. The position requires application of a large body of technical knowledge in forecasting short and long range inventory needs under constantly changing technological and program requirements. This position will be responsible for scrubbing cases (both elective and emergent as needed) for educational purposes with new trays and/or loaner trays to provide physician education on uses, techniques, and application points for instrumentation and implants. In addition, education will be provided both before, during, and after the case for proper constructing and deconstructing of new and/or loaner instruments while on the field for use by the physician and cleaning by sterile processing staff.

Additional responsibilities may include all duties of the OR Trauma Surgical Technologist.

Description

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Implants and implant instrumentation and inventory knowledge is required. A Bachelors Degree in a related field is preferred.

Experience:

5 years experience as a surgical scrub technician with progressive knowledge in implant hardware and specialty instrumentation required.

License(s):

None.

Certification(s):

Incumbent is required to become IAHCSMM Certified within 24 months of hire. Ongoing maintenance of certification is required for continued employment. AHA BLS required.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job- specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
