Job SummaryBattelle is currently seeking an In-Vitro Assay/Microbiology Senior Technician. This position is located in West Jefferson, OH.
Battelle’s Biomedical Research Center is currently seeking an In-Vitro Assay/Microbiology Senior Technician specializing in virology. This position will provide technical support performing standard and complex in-vitro assays to include, but not limited to PCR, ELISA, and cell-based assays as well as other in vitro-related activities. This position is Monday through Friday and will require frequent overtime on nights and weekends; schedule may include holidays.
Responsibilities Work projects may include but not limited to:Working with highly hazardous biological materials in Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) and Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratoryPerforming standard microbiological procedures; perform standard viral assays such as plaque assay, hemagglutination assay, and plaque reduction neutralization assaysFocus will be on viral cell-based assays and virus propagationPerform standard In Vitro Assays such as ELISA, PCR, RNA and DNA isolations, and Flow CytometryMaintaining mammalian, viral, and bacterial cell culturesPerforming routine blood and tissue processingContributing to the development and validation of equipment and biological assaysAbility to write and execute study protocols, methods, and SOPsAbility to work independently and efficiently in a team environmentDecontaminating equipment and materialsMaintaining appropriate documentationRecognize when technical operations deviate from accepted practices.Read SOPs, methods, facility guidelines, etc. used in workplace in a timely manner and adhere to these procedures.Use proper technique to operate necessary equipment to produce high quality data. Operate routine computer programs and perform basic data manipulation in a spreadsheet environment. Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software. Ensure that all equipment used for studies is routinely maintained and/or calibrated.Perform experiments using ratios, percentages, linear regression algorithms, and other basic mathematical and scientific principles. Organize and interpret scientific data.Contribute to and/or write reports and data summaries and organize data tables.Conduct Quality Control and Technical reviews of study data as needed.Ensure that the proper solutions are prepared, that solutions and reagents are not beyond their expiration date, and that the proper paperwork is maintained. Be responsible for ordering reagents, supplies, and equipment. Organize, clean, and maintain the facility laboratories in accordance with GLP and ISO guidelines.Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of theory behind applications and ability to troubleshoot if needed. Maintain a good work attendance record and be punctual for all project work.Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements.Works on assignments that are moderately complex in nature where judgment is required in assessing problems and making recommendations.Performs non-routine analysis to verify the accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work. May assist in identifying ways to control and/or reduce fixed costs without negatively impacting client expectations. May assist in the technical planning and has some discretion when making judgments and completing tasks. Is encouraged to make recommendations such as estimating time requirements for the completion of tasks and/or providing solutions to technical problems.Trains and guides less experienced staff on specific tasks. Provides input to performance reviews, as requested.Works under general supervision and instruction of more experienced staff. Reports observations/problems clearly and concisely, recognizing and highlighting specific deviations.Demonstrates the ability to perform assignments that may not be standardized in nature. Exhibits technical knowledge to perform moderately complex assignments. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding behind application by beginning to troubleshoot and interpret results. Conducts specified non-routine analysis of data and prepares data for written reports. Uses established outlines for documenting results for inclusion in technical reports.Key Qualifications Associate’s degree in microbiology/molecular biology plus 3 years’ experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in microbiology/molecular biology plus 2 years’ experience.2 years’ experience in a laboratory setting working with viruses post graduationExperience growing viruses and/or experience developing viral assaysStrong written and oral communication skills.Must be a US citizen.Ability to obtain/maintain certification in the Biological Suitability Assessment Program (BSAP).Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval.Ability to obtain/maintain CDC approval to work with BSAT material.Must be willing to work in a biosafety level 2 (BSL2) and 3 (BSL3) (biocontainment) environment and able to wear appropriate respiratory protection.Must be willing to be immunized with FDA licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (IND) recommended for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents.Must be willing to participate in random drug screening.Respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations.Sufficiently medically fit to do work in a lab wearing appropriate respiratory equipment and perform all assigned duties.Ability to work night, weekend, and holiday hours on an as-needed or rotating basis.Newly hired employees are subject to a 90-day Introductory Period, during which their performance is evaluated by supervision.Preferred Qualifications Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience working in a BSL-3 laboratory and those with knowledge or training in FDA Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
