HDR is a leader in the transit industry and we are working on the largest, most complex and exciting projects across Canada. The Transit Market Sector at HDR is a broad and diverse practice that spans a large variety of project types including LRT, BRT, subway, metro and heavy rail. We work with our clients across the project life-cycle including planning, preliminary design, detail design, construction oversight and program management.
HDR is seeking an Industrial Design Manager - Transit Facilities to direct the design of transit facility-focused projects. The primary responsibilities include the project design oversight of all industrial/transit facilities – including vehicle and transit maintenance facilities for heavy rail, subway, LRT and Bus based systems. The projects will range from master plans, feasibility studies, preliminary design to detailed design and construction administration. This role requires active participation and occasionally leading key transit facility pursuits and proposal preparation. The candidate is expected to have a strong foundation in the transit industry, knowledge of client programs and experience managing multi-disciplinary project deliverables.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead all conceptual and detail design aspects of vehicle and transit maintenance facilities for small to medium and large, projects.Provide guidance and specialty facility design services to multi-disciplines design teamIndependently coordinate the work of professional staff and balance the team throughout the entire project's developmentParticipate in leading concept/design meetings with various clients and architectsConduct work sessions for design developmentCoordinate workload through the entire project development for completing documents on scheduleTrack the financial aspects of projects, and coordinate and adjust the work effort with the team to ensure that the work is completed within the budgetServe as the design manager of the production team when requested by the overall Project ManagerFacility programming, report writing, site master planning, developing specifications and construction documentsSelection, coordination and layout of various aspects of facilities design (vehicle maintenance equipment, site flow, etc.)Submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs reviewConduct construction field observationsOther design / engineering tasks as assignedRequired Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or ArchitectureA minimum of 15 years experience on industrial/transit facility and civil engineering design projectsStrong background in multi-discipline design including architecture, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and fire protectionExperience in cost control, scheduling and risk managementCompetence in Microsoft Word, Excel and ProjectStrong organizational and time management skills with ability to effectively work on multiple projects simultaneouslyMust be a team player and a self-starterAn attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a mustPreferred Qualifications
P.Eng. or Registered ArchitectExperience working on TTC, Metrolinx, CN, VIA, CP and Translink projectsCommand of Revit and AutoCAD, and knowledge of SketchUpWhy HDR
