Responsibilities You will perform work that includes maintaining, installing and repairing a wide variety of food handling and refrigeration equipment from less than 1/8 hp and up to 100 ton air-conditioning units. You will maintain, inspect, repair and operate all galley equipment. You will perform all recurring type scheduled maintenance, emergency repairs and provide the maintenance foreman with equipment status. You will observe or operate equipment to detect malfunctions and determine the cause of trouble. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications This position has a Selective Placement Factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The Selective Placement Factor is: You must possess a current Universal EPA refrigerant certification. You must submit a copy of your license with your application to be considered for this position. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision performing the following duties: 1) Installing, maintaining, repairing, or modifying machinery and equipment associated with utility systems on a galley; 2) Using test equipment, trade tools, and schematics or diagrams to repair a variety of industrial equipment; 3) Ordering and maintaining equipment to ensure galley machinery and equipment are in efficient operating and usable order; AND 4) Determining the proper tools and materials needed to complete equipment maintenance. ***NOTE: This experience must be fully and clearly supported in your resume. Education Additional Information This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. Several vacancies may be filled. Incumbent will be required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis while on duty at San Clemente Island; duty hours for this position are currently four/ten-hour days, either Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday. Employee stays on San Clemente Island during days of duty. Entitled to Remote Allowance of $10/day Certain incentives (such as Recruitment, Relocation or Student Loan Repayment) may be authorized to eligible selectees. A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. Must possess a Universal type EPA refrigerant certification. Physical effort The incumbent is required to work from ladders, climb, kneel, crawl, stand, stoop and work in close quarters. Must be able to lift 100 pounds with assistance, the work requires considerable standing, climbing, stooping, bending, stretching and working in cramped, awkward positions. Working Conditions Incumbent will work both indoors and out. Will be exposed to temperature, weather and noise extremes. Will work with chemicals that can produce life threatening gasses if improperly handled, Will work from elevated platforms, scaffolds and ladders and must follow safety regulations while using such equipment. Scrapes, cuts, scratches and bruises are frequently incurred with the use of various tools end working in cramped and tight quarters. Will work on or near pressurized steam lines, sewer lines and over-head obstructions. Incumbent will also be exposed to blood borne pathogens, bacteria, and testing chemicals that require personnel protective equipment and foul smells. Incumbent will be exposed to electrical hazards with a danger of shocks, burns, scrapes, cuts, scratches and bruises. Period of time spent are in very hot/cold abnormal temperatures, humidity, icy and slippery condition and environments in connection with HVAC-R maintenance and repairs. Considerable manual manipulations are required and physical strain is encountered in performing tedious maintenance and repair in hard-to-get at locations. Must be in generally good physical condition, Must have good eyesight, hearing and be mentally alert.
