Summary You will serve as an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Department of Navy of NMRTC CHARLESTON SC. This is a DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD/Modified Direct Hire Authority announcement. Responsibilities You will be required to recognize and evaluate occupational health hazards, including those for which the nature and extent of hazard is not completely understood. You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations individually or as part of a team. You will assess work practices to identify the population at risk and to detect violations of published health standards (e.g. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, DoD and DoN directives). You will present oral briefs, if requested, and provide detailed written reports of IH survey findings including hazards identified, assessment of the hazards, exposure monitoring required and controls recommended. You will prepare written workplace monitoring plans and track their completion, updating the plans as necessary. You will evaluate/review the results of sampling performed by yourself, other industrial hygienists, or industrial hygiene technicians to statistically determine if occupational exposures are in excess of published health standards. You will review facility plans for new construction, renovation and modification of existing structures for appropriate engineering controls to control hazardous materials, noise and physical hazards. You will provide on-the-job technical guidance to on-site junior industrial hygienists and industrial hygiene technicians in carrying out inspections, surveys and samplings You will maintain, calibrate, and select appropriate equipment and media and conducts or oversees sampling. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs; Experience analyzing and evaluating occupational health hazards with monitoring equipment; Experience conducting routine investigations of work environments for occupational health hazards and exposures and make reports of inspections for review. OR- 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or combination of education and experience that equates to 100% of the requirement. GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience performing surveys and analysis of a variety of physical, chemical, ergonomic, and radiation problems/conditions in the workplace affecting personnel safety and health; Experience investigating health problems to determine probable cause and recommend measures to minimize health hazards; Experience devising control measures, including ventilation, shielding, material substitution, change in work procedures, isolation, education and personal protective devices, and carrying out industrial hygiene inspections and surveys. Education Industrial Hygiene Series 0690 Individual Occupational Requirements Basic Requirements Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Additional Information THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT.
