Duties:
Supervise incarcerated individuals and civilian employees; repair and fabricate various types of metal and steel; instructs/trains in repair and fabrication of metal; monitors tool control; performs related duties as needed. Maintaining security in an institutional setting. Responsible for shop production and quality. Responsible for maintaining all equipment in the shop. Performs other duties as assigned.
CANDIDATE MUST BE MIG. TIG. AND
STICK CERTIFIED ON VARIOUS METALS (AWS CERTIFICATION)
SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL HAVE TO SUCCESSFULLY PASS
A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION, DRUG SCREENING,
OSHA RESPIRATOR MEDICAL EVALUATION AND BACKGROUND
AND MUST ATTEND A FOUR (4) WEEK RECRUIT ACADEMY
Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants must have one year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in industrial welding, the major duties of which involve training or instruction. Valid drivers license required. Thorough knowledge of welding, procedures and safety practice, Knowledge of types and uses of handheld tools and skills using them. Ability to lift and carry heavy objects. Climb ladders and stand for prolonged periods of time. Ability to maintain accurate records.
Comments:
This is a Civil Service position. Candidate must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for this title and score must be reached in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. Please note that salaries for union positions are determined according to the provisions of the respective collective bargaining agreement. Applicants must have no felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609. The Massachusetts Department of Correction shall not hire anyone who may have direct contact with offenders, who has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents. The DOC urges bi-lingual applicants to apply.

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in industrial arts work, the major duties of which involved training or instructing, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in industrial arts may be substituted for one year of the required (A) experience.
Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
