Responsibilities
JOB SUMMARY / PURPOSE
The Nursing Informaticist collaborates and/or co-leads in the evaluation, implementation, and maintenance of Clinical Information Systems as they relate to patient care. Additional responsibilities include coordinating and implementing other computer activities that relate to Hospital Information Systems and patient care in general that strive to improve patient care/safety, and/or reduce costs.
Primary systems include, but are not limited to the following: Clinical Documentation, Medication Administration, Point of Care Systems and any other systems that are used by and/or impact nursing care providers.
ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Complies with safety and emergency procedures.Displays knowledge and complies with the National Patient Safety Goals.Contributes to improving clinical patient safety.Participates in clinical patient safety rounds.Implements an age appropriate plan of care in conjunction with the health care team per Scope of Service.Maintains policies, procedures, and training programs in the event of computer outages.Possesses ability to make timely decisions in emergency situations.Maintains confidentiality.Follow all standards of safety precautions.Complies with Hospital/Department/Unit policies.Abides by Patient Care Services standards.Follows standards of conduct & policies/procedures of SJHC.Follows all applicable laws and regulations and reports violations to the appropriate chain of command.Documents activities consistent with Hospital/Department/Unit Guidelines.Prepares a detailed work program and estimates for projects & monitors progress of work against these estimates.Monitors quality & quantity of work accomplished within detailed work plans and analyzes variances from the plan; takes action required to complete projects on time.Designs or assists in designing report forms.Creates reports as needed using various reporting tools.Prepares statistical analysis of data to aid in identifying trends and aberrances.Coordinates writing, implementing and maintaining policies/procedures that correlate to computer functions.Performs critical/frequent procedures or services.Seeks to reduce redundancy and improve usability of all information systems.Seeks to discern user needs and find solutions to meet those needs whenever feasible.Guarantees that user personnel are appropriately involved throughout design and installation processes and are properly trained upon project completion.Coordinates the plan for and performs staff instruction on use of Clinical Information Systems screens and new functions.Provides care/services based on identified needs.Effectively problem solves and provides support to clinical system users.Ensures the consistent availability of instructions required and the equipment inventory on a 24-hour basis for all supported clinical information systems.Evaluates system impact on patients and personnel and makes recommendations for changes.Provides input into preparation of project budgets and monitors timelines and resource allocation.Develops realistic goals and objectives that are in congruence with SJHC’s strategic plan, mission and values.Uses required equipment for providing care/services.Recommends and/or makes updates to the system to insure compliance with rules/regulations and to ensure the system remains current.Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job requirements.Consults with Hospital/department resources.Collaborates with IT and others in the selection, design, implementation and ongoing support of clinical information systems.Maintains effective lines of communication with the clinical services and management staff and physicians.Works with physicians, nursing service and other clinical services providing technical assistance with respect to clinical information systems.Works with IT personnel to make recommendations and promote changes that enhance the efficiency & coordination of information systems.Serves as key communications link on clinical information system projects.Works with installation directors, field engineers, and programmers on enhancements to, or problems with clinical information systems.Coordinates activities in clinical services related to implementation of computer programs.Demonstrates professional responsibility as per job classification.Demonstrates organization skills, written & verbal communication skills, creativity, & self-motivation.Possesses the ability to work productively in an individual or group/team environment.Reports on the job as scheduled.Actively engages in acquiring & updating skills pertinent to systems utilized.Consider recommendations objectively.Changes behavior appropriately based on recommendations/evaluations.Other job duties assigned by Management.Qualifications

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training
5 years nursing experience. Leadership experience (team leader, project manager, supervisor etc.). Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills. Excellent facilitation and problem solving skills. Project management experience. Ability to drive desired results/outcomes through facilitation and collaboration without direct authority. Demonstrated ability to coordinate/monitor project team assignments for task completion from a work plan. Demonstrated ability to confidently take accountability for decision milestones and project deliverables within a timeline. Advance knowledge and understanding of nursing documentation, informatics, nursing language and nursing conceptual models. Adequate conversational English is required in order that the individual be able to take direction from management, understand how to complete job tasks, communicate adequately with patients and co-workers as necessary, understand and follow safety guidelines, and understand the Associate Handbook and all hospital policies.
