This position (located in Wilkesboro, N.C.) will assist with communications as a writer, media relations coordinator, marketing professional and spokesperson for a high-profile N.C. Department of Transportation highway division. This position involves planning, developing, executing and evaluating communication strategies and plans that promote the department and its programs to internal and external audiences. This position will interact directly with members of the media, conduct on-camera interviews, and coordinate responses to media inquiries and interviews with NCDOT subject matter experts. This employee is responsible for writing news releases, articles, communication and marketing plans, speeches and social media content. In addition, this employee will handle presentations for N.C. Department of Transportation leadership and other communications office projects. This employee will need to work with each assigned area to identify communications and marketing needs and will proactively pursue opportunities to effectively communicate NCDOT’s goals and promote its programs to a variety of audiences. This position interacts directly with the directors and staff of the communications office and NCDOT leadership. The employee also will interact with the Transportation Secretary, deputy secretaries, division engineers and other management and staff, and members of the N.C. Board of Transportation. It is crucial that this employee understand and support the goals and commitments of the NCDOT so these can be effectively communicated internally and externally through available mediums. This employee must have a strong working knowledge of the department’s operations and an ability to synthesize complex information so it can be understood by a variety of audiences. This position also requires the ability to balance multiple responsibilities under a tight deadline and to maintain professional working relationships with individuals both within and outside the department. This position does require being on an on-call rotation. This position will assist with communications during crisis situations.
