Instructional Designer for Online Programs
Location: Albany, NY Category: Promotional Posted On: Tue Feb 4 2025 Job Description: An Instructional Designer's primary role is to guide and assist faculty in designing, developing, and building high-quality online courses for the University at Albany's online program. The goal of this work is to support the University's educational mission and the growth of online programs. The Instructional Designer will work with faculty to ensure that online courses are designed to ensure effective, evidence-based teaching practices by engaging in the following activities: (1) building ongoing consultative relationships with faculty to support them as they design, build, and deliver fully online courses; (2) developing and curating resources in support of effective teaching for fully online courses; (3) developing and curating resources in support of effective technical design and implementation of online courses; (4) building and maintaining a community of online instructors across the University; and (5) engaging in ongoing professional development in effective online teaching practices and emerging teaching technologies. Primary Responsibilities: + Provide one-on-one support for faculty who are designing online or blended courses for fully online programs, collaborating with other units as appropriate. + The instructional designer will serve as primary consulting contact for faculty teaching in fully online programs. This requires them to work with culturally diverse population of faculty and graduate student instructors to prepare them to design and build quality online courses for a diverse population of students. + Develop (or curate), publish, and/or present information articulating best pedagogical practices for online instruction + The instructional designer will be responsible for developing or curating materials that could be used by online faculty outside the consultative setting. This includes publishing print and web-based information about best practices in online teaching and presenting workshops focused on specific teaching practices that lead to student success and retention. + Develop (or curate), publish, and/or present information that addresses technical and logistical issues related to online instruction + The instructional designer will be responsible for developing or curating materials the logistics of online instruction, including effective use of the Learning Management System and other technologies that are conducive to effective teaching and learning in online courses and programs. This includes publishing print and web-based information about effective use of learning technologies in online courses and presenting workshops and/or webinars about using technologies effectively in online courses. + Build and maintain a community of practice among UAlbany faculty who teach online courses + The instructional designer will be responsible for ensuring that online faculty have structured opportunities to share their experiences and learn from each other. This might include activities like facilitating virtual or in-person meetings and sharing resources in a virtual space. This is an area for significant growth in online at UAlbany. + Ongoing professional development + The instructional designer must stay current in the field of online education in order to effectively consult with instructors, develop programming, and develop resources. This requires an investment of time in professional development including attending conferences in the field, researching trends and best practices, and maintaining fluency with both classic and current scholarship in the field of online higher education. Functional and Supervisory Relationships: + Reports to Director, CATLOE + Supervises the following positions: N/A + May supervise employees as assigned (if no direct reports at time of filling position) Job Requirements: + Familiarity with theories of learning/instructional design and understanding of pedagogical issues related to technology-enhanced teaching and learning + Familiarity with instructional features of Desire2Learn's Brightspace course management system or similar (e.g. Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) + Excellent communication skills, including professional experience in the development and delivery of presentations, workshops and/or trainings in an educational setting + Ability to work with culturally diverse populations + Strong organization, time management, and communication abilities to carry initiatives to success + Ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a team + Understanding of multimedia tools in online teaching and learning, such as Photoshop, Captivate, Camtasia, mobile apps, lecture/screen capture, and video applications + Knowledge of universal design for accessible online courses and content + Ability to successfully initiate, organize, lead/manage, and complete projects as part of a team Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications: + Bachelor's degree from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization. + Minimum 2 years of experience in instructional design or instructional technology in a higher education setting + Experience supporting faculty in a teaching/learning environment + Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community. + Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging, relative to their role. Preferred Qualifications: + Master's degree in Instructional Design, Curriculum Development, Information Design or a related field from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization. + Experience developing online courses + Experience teaching in a formal educational setting (classroom and/or online), preferably using a course management system for instruction + Familiarity with the use of programming/markup languages related to online learning (e.g. HTML, XML, CSS, Java, JavaScript, etc.) Working Environment: + Typical office environment + Some evening hours may be required Additional Information: This is a promotional opportunity for current UAlbany employees.
