Instructional Designer or Senior Instructional Designer

A&S Learning Design and Technology (LDT) at the University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for the role of Instructional Designer or Senior Instructional Designer. LDT is a unit of the Dean’s Office advancing the teaching and learning priorities of College & Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (A&S). We are a collaborative team supporting faculty through instructional design, specialized learning spaces, instructional technology integration, and incubation of innovative projects. 

 

This role will have a lasting impact in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teaching at UVA. In this role, you will work primarily with faculty members in Science, Math, and other A&S quantitative disciplines, leveraging your knowledge of evidence- and research-informed instructional approaches to engage in consultations, training, and hands-on support. You will also contribute to ongoing A&S and University initiatives promoting inclusive, engaged learning in introductory Science courses and to enact inclusive culture change in participating departments.  

 

Appointment as Instructional Designer or Senior Instructional Designer will depend on experience, education, knowledge, and skills.  

 

Responsibilities of the Instructional Designer will include: 

Instructional Design Support (40%) 

Consult with individuals and instructional teams to encourage inclusive, learning-centered course design and instructional approaches 

Design and deliver workshops and resources in collaboration with faculty and partners 

Facilitate faculty exploration of new learning technologies, pedagogical approaches, and spaces across diverse modalities, with a focus on in-person learning  

Special Projects (30%) 

Collaborate with UVA partners to facilitate faculty engagement in initiatives supporting  equitable and inclusive STEM learning and departmental change 

Cultivate and strengthen partnerships with faculty and diverse University partners and stakeholders 

Apply project management and facilitation processes to promote project success  

Contributing to LDT and Arts & Sciences initiatives (30%) 

With LDT colleagues, provide design support for projects funded by LDT’s Learning Technology incubator grant program  

Research and promote evidence-based and innovative approaches to fostering meaningful learning and inclusive learning environments 

Take initiative to develop and maintain expertise in using relevant learning technologies  

Support implementation of appropriate instructional technology solutions   

Other duties as assigned 

 

The Senior Instructional Designer will have the expected responsibilities outlined above, as well as additional responsibilities including project leadership and innovation, additional special projects, service on relevant University committees, and other duties as assigned.  

 

Qualifications:  

For Instructional Designer  

Education: Bachelor's Degree Required. Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement. Advanced degree preferred.  

Experience: 3 years of directly relevant work experience required.  

 

For Senior Instructional Designer 

Education: Bachelor's Degree Required. Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement. Advanced degree (EdD or similar) strongly preferred.  

Experience: 5 years of directly relevant work experience required. At least 3 years of higher education experience in faculty development or instructional design with increasing levels of complexity and/or responsibility strongly preferred.  

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate many of the following preferred qualifications: 

Advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g. Curriculum and Instruction, Instructional Design, STEM Education, Ed Psychology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Math) 

Successful experience advancing inclusive STEM teaching, administration, research and/or outreach in a higher education context 

Successful teaching or instructional support experience in a higher education context  

Extensive knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies and design approaches, and experience applying this knowledge in classroom teaching and/or design work 

Familiarity or experience with project management and/or assessment 

Interest and/or experience with learning technologies to support STEM instruction 

Familiarity with accessible course design and digital accessibility 

Facility in applying data-informed approaches to understand and address complex challenges 

Excellent written and spoken English communication skills  

Readiness to take initiative, be self-directed, and apply creativity in accomplishing objectives  

Eagerness to grow, learn, and develop new skills 

Eagerness to contribute to highly collaborative and team-based work 

 

This role will report to Hope Fitzgerald, Director of A&S Learning Design & Technology.  

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. A hybrid work schedule may be available, dependent upon the needs of the department and incumbent's performance.

 

The anticipated salary for Instructional Designer is $72,000+ annually. The anticipated salary for Senior Instructional Designer is $78,000+ annually.
