Job Summary The Department of Physics invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, fixed-term Instructor position. Reappointment is at discretion of the Department Head. The faculty member may have the option to supplement the salary during the summer through opportunities related to the position duties. The incumbent will join a thriving, cohesive, award-winning physics department that deeply values undergraduate and graduate education and is committed to evidence-based instructional practices. The lower division educational staff meets every three weeks to discuss curricular matters. The incumbent in this position will primarily teach lower division physics courses, supervise lower division laboratories, develop curricula, maintain professional currency, and perform service. The primary mission of the Department of Physics is to provide undergraduate and graduate education, and conduct basic and applied research. The department offers Doctoral, Masters, and Bachelors degrees in Physics. There are research programs in biophysics, optics, condensed matter, subatomic physics, astrophysics, cosmology and quantum physics, computational physics, and physics education. The department has over twenty tenure-line and instructional faculty members, and approximately 140 majors and 45 graduate students. Through this position, the Department is looking to enhance its introductory physics courses, both online and on campus. Instruction includes in-class activities, laboratory activities and supervision, class administration, regular office hours, and participation in program-level assessment of student learning, in keeping with the highest professional standards. + Sustain a commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive learning environment for all students. + Supervise and mentor Teaching Assistants and Learning Assistants assigned to their courses. + Maintain familiarity with recent developments in evidence-based instructional practices. + Collaborate with other faculty in a respectful and collegial manner to develop and coordinate curricula. + General mentoring of students. 5% Service Responsibilities include: + Service on departmental and university committees. What You Will Need + Master’s degree in Physics or related fields (for example, Electrical Engineering, Astronomy, Geophysics, Applied Mathematics) by the start of the appointment. + Experience with or demonstrated potential for teaching physics at the college or university level.
