Job Summary

At Oregon State University, Ethnic Studies is the interdisciplinary and comparative study of ethnicity, Indigeneity, race, and racism in the United States and globally. The field was born out of student and community-led social movements and cultural/political struggles of the 1960s. As Ethnic Studies scholars, our research and teaching provide a critical framework for historical comparative understandings of particular racialized and Indigenous groups as well as the relationships among them. We do so through an analysis of the intersections of race with gender, class, sexuality, religion, immigration status and other systems of difference and power — past and present. As a field of study, we analyze the shifting nature of racisms and the histories of resistance locally, nationally, and transnationally. The program is currently expanding its offerings to include coverage of race and ethnicity in a global context while strengthening existing minors in Indigenous Studies, Latinx/a/o-Chicanx/a/o Studies, and Social Justice.
The Ethnic Studies program is part of the School of Language, Culture, and Society, which also includes Anthropology; World Languages and Cultures; and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and has 8 majors and 18 minors. Specialization is open but we are particularly interested in course coverage of our current Ecampus offerings and their on-campus equivalents. Teaching specializations and experience highly desired in Ethnic Studies 101 “Introduction to Ethnic Studies,” 201 “Inventing Ethnic America,” 241 “Introduction to Native American Studies,” 351 “Ethnic Minorities in Oregon,” 452 “Ethnicity in Film,” and other courses as relevant.
The School’s central focus is on global justice with emphases in social and environment justice, food insecurity, and Latino/a studies. This position within the School’s Ethnic Studies Program will help build upon our commitments to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for an increasingly diverse student body.
