General Summary
Help support Parks and Recreation in their mission to enhance the quality of life for all through the stewardship of public land and parks and to provide quality recreational experiences. The City of Charlottesville is seeking qualified candidates who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.
The hiring amount is between $25.00 and $36.00 an hour. Offer is dependent on qualifications and internal equity. This is a non-exempt, temporary (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.
Dance Instructors are responsible for planning, instruction and supervision of basic skill level dance classes. Higher skill level classes are expected to begin to put together short routines and series of skills. Instruction may target individuals or groups across the age and ability spectrum. Primarily and most frequently, work is performed under direct supervision within one functional area and is of a routine nature. Reports to a Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
+ Plans and instructs a specialized recreation class, program or event appropriate to participant age group and subject matter, developing specific program outcomes;
+ Provides supervisor with written lesson plans of class content for approval;
+ Communicates effectively, professionally, courteously and thoroughly with the highest regard to the customer;
+ Positively motivates all participants to accomplish their personal goals;
+ Explains and demonstrates activity techniques and may also perform for class participants;
+ Prepares instructional materials and supplies;
+ Sets up and cleans room/area;
+ Enforces safety rules and regulations; maintains order in class and reports problems to supervisor;
+ Responsible for keeping accurate records, including incident/accident reports, time records and daily attendance;
+ Required to notify program/facility management of all equipment needs, safety hazards and class concerns;
+ Demonstrates exceptional, positive customer service skills with participants, parents and staff;
+ Stays current on industry standards and their influence on desired outcomes;
+ Attends staff meetings and assists in developing ideas for new class programs in order to meet the needs of the recreational facility and/or the community;
+ Performs related duties as required.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Minimum age: 18
+ Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma.
+ Minimum of three (3) months of related experience instructing/supervising individuals in the specialized class OR a minimum of two (2) years of experience participating at a high level in the specialized skill/class in a competitive and/or organized environment.
Special Requirements:
+ All staff serving in this role must attend the Parks and Recreation Certification program for Instructors on an annual basis.
+ Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include early mornings, weeknights, weekends and holidays.
+ Depending upon assignment, may require American Red Cross Instructor Certification (WSI, LGI, LGIT and Coaches Safety Training), OSHA and Blood Borne Pathogens, current CPR/First Aid certification and/or certification from a nationally-accredited organization in a specialty area.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of professional behavior in a recreation environment; ability to maintain order among participants; ability to instruct participants with different learning styles; ability to demonstrate positive customer service skills when communicating with participants, parents and staff; strong safety orientation; ability to think independently and develop routines for teaching specific classes.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information
Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
This position may be required to work weekends, nights and/or holidays.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.
Dependent upon assignment, a majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, blood-borne pathogens and/or infectious bacteria. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
