No If Temporary, enter End Date: Position Summary SUNY Cortland is accepting applications for a tenure-track instructor or assistant professor in the Sport Management Department. Job title is dependent on terminal degree status. The teaching requirement is four classes in the fall and three in the spring for the instructor rank and three fall and spring classes for the assistant professor rank. Undergraduate student advising is required in both roles. Both positions are eligible for continuing appointment.

SUNY Cortland offers the largest and oldest sport management program in the SUNY system. The department’s mission focuses on high-impact, career-driven outcomes for students. High-impact learning opportunities include fieldwork, internships, study abroad, applied classes, and more. Students may choose from five concentrations (event management, media & I.T., sales, international sport, and intercollegiate sport) within the major.

A department that actively promotes equity, inclusion, diversity, and social justice, the SUNY Cortland Sport Management Department features a unique plethora of elective classes in areas such as social media, sport analytics, international sport management, entrepreneurship, sport tourism, streaming media production, disability and sport, ticket sales, video games, fantasy sports, eSports, and more. All students are required to work one semester with SUNY Cortland’s Athletic Department and complete a full-time senior internship.

Major Responsibilities Teaching Teach undergraduate and/or graduate sport management courses. Teaching assignments will depend on department needs and the candidate’s expertise and experience.


Scholarship/ResearchEngage in scholarly work and activities that involve undergraduates or graduate students as appropriate to the application and receipt of tenure and promotion in the SUNY Cortland Sport Management Department.
Service Advise and mentor students in sport management. Provide service to the department, School of Professional Studies, the University, SUNY, academia, and the community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate sport management courses with assignments based on department needs and candidate expertise. Demonstrated scholarly productivity with peer-reviewed publications or strong progress in pursuing scholarly work. Ability to engage in research activities that involve undergraduates or graduate students, contributing to the department’s mission and supporting tenure and promotion. Ability to advise and mentor undergraduate and/or graduate students in sport management. Commitment to providing service to the department, School of Professional Studies, the University, SUNY, academia, and the broader community. Demonstrated commitment to promoting equity, inclusion, diversity, and social justice within the department and the larger university community. Functional and Supervisory Relationships Reports to the academic department chair Works closely with department faculty Required Qualifications Instructor Rank Master’s degree in sport management or a related field.


Assistant Professor Rank Terminal degree or Ph.D. or doctoral candidate who is all but dissertation (ABD) with degree conferral by August 2025 in sport management or related field. Preferred Qualifications Higher Education teaching experience. Scholarly productivity with peer-reviewed publications or strong interest in future work. The department seeks academic expertise and/or at least five years of work experience in event management, information technology, digital media production, or sports finance/economics. Applicants with teaching, industry, or research experience in other areas will also be considered.
