Our Science Department on the Florence Campus is seeking to expand its pool of part-time faculty to teach in-person Biology such as Cell Biology for Health Professions, Cell Systems, Organismal Systems, and Ecosystems.

This is an application pool posting for 2024-2025, starting Fall term 2024. The assigned location for this position is at the Lane Community College Florence Campus located in Florence, Oregon Classes may include BI 101, 102, 103, 112, depending on candidate experience and department needs. Beyond the required education and experience, instructors must have a passion for what they teach, and have teaching styles that support student success. Instructors are responsible for following division and college procedures in support of teaching and learning.

Position Purpose: To provide high-quality instruction that meets established learning aims and outcomes for students in Cell Biology for Health Professions (BI 112), Biology: Cell Systems (BI 101), Biology: Organismal Systems (BI 102), and Biology: Ecosystems (BI 103). Essential Functions: Essential Functions
Effectively teach biology courses as assigned by Division Dean. Coordinate course materials, labs, textbook orders, packets, and learning management system implementation with discipline colleagues according to Division and College procedures. Collaborate with other instructors to develop and implement research-informed optimal learning environments for students. Make effective use of current web technology and computer application programs for instruction. Help design and implement accurate formative and summative learning assessments to support courses’ aims and objectives. Provide a supportive learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds and needs. Must be willing and prepared to accommodate students with needs for modified instructional materials. Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students. Other duties as assigned.


Support student learning through activities that include:
Exhibit compliance with College policies and procedures, accountability for leave time, timesheet completion, release time, textbook ordering and related functions. Sustain currency in discipline and innovation in teaching. Maintain and post-teaching schedule, regular meetings and office hours. Maintain physical presence for instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college and community, as specified in the College Operations Policies and Procedures. Maintain requirements for student records, attendance, grades, and/or other documentation. Ensure a safe, quality classroom or lab, including equipment, supplies, and inventory. Faculty with teaching duties are responsible for evaluating student achievement, of clearly identified learning outcomes, consistent with core ability outcomes. Meet accreditation requirements.
Curriculum Development and Implementation
Provide high-quality classroom instruction. Create course content, develop and revise course content and materials. Establish learning outcomes consistent with core ability outcomes, assess outcomes using appropriate assessment tools, and use assessment results to inform improvements at a program and course level. Incorporate college values into the curriculum and promote a respectful learning environment including facilitating awareness of multicultural and diversity issues in curricula. Teach and develop all class syllabi and course materials, in a form that can be directly delivered to, and used by, students. Confer with students on course materials. Deliver curriculum to students in traditional and online formats. With support from other discipline faculty, develop familiarity and understanding of pedagogical approaches used in creating, developing and revising course content and materials. Work effectively within a structure of collective ownership of the biology curriculum stewarded by full-time faculty members, based on research-proven pedagogical models, that are continuously improved based on research and collegial collaboration. Assess the effectiveness of the learning environment using appropriate assessment tools, and use assessment results to inform improvements at a program and course level. Use and contribute to the development of common class syllabi and course materials in an effective manner. Work effectively with students in in-class and online formats.

Work may be overseen by a lead faculty member. Physical Demands/Working Environment: Work safely in classroom and laboratory settings; may be exposed to hazardous conditions. This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that include office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform computer work in the form of word processing, data entry, spreadsheet work, and web-based research for more than seven (7) hours a day. Work involves concentrated mental and visual attention for sustained periods of time. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Work safely. Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: Teaching biology to general lower-division college populations. Common student learning difficulties, current advances in teaching methods in biology, and appropriate uses of technology in teaching.


Ability to: Integrate these elements into curricula and teaching to effectively engage students in learning. Manage a classroom and teach using a learning management system (e.g., Moodle) and online resources; effective classroom presentation and speaking skills. Design and use classroom assessment techniques and assessments of student learning to improve the learning environment, challenge and engage students, and allow them to advance their knowledge and skills in a variety of ways. Coordinate curricula and laboratory activities with other part-time and full-time faculty. Follow and collectively improve established curricula aimed and teach to course learning aims and objectives. Collaborate with peers and support staff in departmental, campus or community projects. Advance one’s knowledge of effective pedagogies. Adhere to College and contractual obligations.
