Job Description Summary:
Draper’s machine shop specializes in high mix low volume work in areas such as Defense, Space, Microelectronics, and Biomedical. Our Instrument Maker is a highly skilled machinist who demonstrates an exceptional level of workmanship and machining mastery.They are an expert in CAD/CAM programming, fixturing, and operating commonly used CNC machine tools to fabricate instrument hardware to extremely tight tolerances of +/- .0002 or better when required. An instrument maker works without supervision, can mentor and teach other machinists, and can interface directly with engineering to develop new and innovative machining solutions. Instrument makers execute with the highest level of quality and workmanship and can recognize and mitigate potential issues through drawing review and machining process development.
Job Description:
Duties/Responsibilities
Program, setup, and operate manual and CNC machines to fabricate instrument quality hardware.
Maintain tolerances of +/- .0002 or better when required.
Execute work based on instructions provided in the form of drawings, solid models, sketches and verbal instructions.
Mentor and teach other machinists.
Work with engineering to prevent manufacturing issues and develop new machining processes.
Adhere to all shop safety rules.
Maintain a clean and professional work space.
Skills/Abilities
Expert in CAD/CAM programming, preferably with experience in GibbsCAM, PowerMill or ESPRIT (EDM).
Ability to produce high quality parts from raw materials start to finish.
Expert in understanding and interpreting GD&T.
Preferred machine experience includes 3 and 5 axis CNC milling, CNC cylindrical grinding, wire and sinker EDM, CNC mill/turn lathe, and CNC surface grinding.
Experience with materials including aluminums, stainless steels, machinable ceramics, titanium, pure beryllium, plastics, and other ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
Ability to adapt and adjust to rapidly changing priorities, tight deadlines, and unique program requirements.
Education
Graduation from a two year day technical machinist course or four year vocational technical high school.
Experience
Minimum of 15 years of applicable experience working to tight tolerances on high quality precision hardware.
