What We Want
The Instrument Maker III will evaluate, design, construct, modify, repair, calibrate, and maintain all types of scientific instruments and instructional and research apparatus. This position will also be responsible for the instruction and supervision of others in the construction and repair of scientific equipment. What You Need to Know
Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected candidate's education and experience.
Required Education and Experience:
+ High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
+ Eight years of related experience in the design, construction, modification, and repair of precision instruments and equipment
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Knowledge in SolidWorks
+ Knowledge in Mastercam
+ Demonstrated skills and abilities of top instrument makers in the nation, which includes training in the programming and operation of various types of computerized machines and related equipment required in instrument construction
+ Extensive machine shop experience
+ Capability to lift, carry, and move equipment and materials, which may include heavy items
+ Working with a range of hand and power tools specific to instrument making, and the ability to handle them safely and effectively
Preferred Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor's degree in appropriate science or engineering field of study
+ Use of shop equipment and tools
+ Ability to work from verbal instructions and rudimentary sketches and diagrams
+ Working knowledge of diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscope, digital voltmeters, vacuum gauges, voltage and current calibrators, or other equipment or tools used in assigned duties
Responsibilities:
+ Evaluation and Design: Assess the needs and specifications for new scientific instruments and apparatus based on user requirements and research goals. Design and develop blueprints, schematics, and prototypes for new instruments or modifications to existing equipment. Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and researchers to understand functional requirements and ensure designs meet their needs.
+ Construction and Assembly: Construct, assemble, and test scientific instruments and apparatus according to design specifications. Select and utilize appropriate materials, tools, and techniques to build high-quality and reliable instruments. Ensure all constructed instruments meet safety standards and performance criteria.
+ Modification and Repair: Modify existing instruments and apparatus to improve functionality, enhance performance, or adapt to new research requirements. Diagnose and repair faults in scientific instruments, using diagnostic tools and techniques to identify and resolve issues. Maintain detailed records of repairs, modifications, and maintenance activities.
+ Calibration and Maintenance: Calibrate scientific instruments to ensure accuracy and consistency in measurements and data collection. Perform routine maintenance and inspections on instruments and apparatus to prevent malfunctions and extend service life.
+ Instruction: Instruct and train technicians and research staff in the construction, repair, and maintenance of scientific instruments, as well as performing other duties as assigned.
