INTERDISCIPLINARY, FIRE PROTECTION & MECHANICAL ENGINEER
Summary Serves as a Mechanical/Fire Protection Engineer in Mechanical & Electrical Section, the Design Branch, Engineering Division with responsibility for performing design and drawings and making technical recommendations concerning a wide variety of facilities through planning, design, and construction stages. Responsibilities Fire Protection Engineering (75%) Designs fire suppression, fire prevention, fire alarm, mass notification, accessibility, and life safety Comply with relevant codes, regulations, and instructions provided during the design development; and for feasibility, clarity, and consistency with related engineering features Develops AutoCAD drawing, design analyses, and specifications for fire detection, fire protection, mass notification, and life safety features of design work accomplished in-house Visits sites of proposed future projects to acquire field data necessary to support design and construction activities. Coordinates with fire protection personnel Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) om project related fire protection code interpretation and code deviations. Mechanical Engineering (25%) Applies mechanical engineering principles and hydraulic theory pertaining particularly to unusually large axial flow pumps (up to 1040 c.f.s. capacity and 152" in diameter) for drainage and flood control Exercises sound professional judgement in performing research and feasibility investigations and development; preparation and/or evaluation of reports and technical briefs Prepare and/or evaluation of reports and technical briefs Prepare portions of technical specifications in connection with preliminary and final planning, design, construction, installation and overall testing of the above pumps and related equipment Selects major mechanical equipment and establishes general configuration of pumping station layouts Determines final selection of plant equipment which will obtain optimum overall combination of reliability, efficiency, operational flexibility and monetary economy of design from personal studies and investigations Develops, coordinates, and prepares all preliminary and final mechanical engineering designs Prepare drawings, sketches, design analyses, special reports, operating manuals, contract plans and specifications, and preliminary and final engineering cost estimates (for both initial contract and annual operating cost) Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: Only applicants who meet one of the employment authority categories below are eligible to apply for this job. Specialized Experience: GS-12: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which is defined as: demonstrating practical engineering experience for complex projects, independently carry out directives and evaluations, develop information papers, and exercise judgment when interpreting policies and procedures. Education requirement: Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Computer Skills Mathematical Reasoning Oral Communication Problem Solving Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
