INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/METEOROLOGIST/OCEANOGRAPHER
Summary You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/METEROLOGIST/OCEANOGRAPHER in the Geospatial Analysis and Support Division, Geospatial Analysis and Production Branch (NP222), Warfighting Support Center (WSC), Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS. Responsibilities You will develop and design new Open Geospatial Consortium-compliant XML-based web services and maintains existing ones for accessing spatial data. You will utilize geospatial technologies and scientific principle to develop new capabilities. You will provide technical guidance and instruction for personnel on proper METOC (waves, currents, salinity, wind, precipitation, humidity, etc.) You will develop training material as well as standard operating procedures (SOP) manuals for any relevant analysis or geo-processing. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience with GIS technology, geospatial concepts, and various geospatial datasets indicates that the applicant must have knowledge of a wide range of concepts, principles, and practices. Experience with physical science theories, principles, and techniques as they relate to either oceanography or meteorology demonstrates that the applicant must have practical knowledge in these areas. Experience with addressing difficult, complex work assignments proves that the applicant must have the ability to develop new methods and approaches or utilize established guidelines to satisfy customer requirements. Experience with communicating effectively both orally and in writing with all personnel, including team members, management, sponsors, and stakeholders. Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess General Physical Science Series, 1301 Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. - OR - Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Meteorology Series, 1340 Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics; Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale); Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions. * Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science. - OR - Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Oceanography Series, 1360 Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. - OR - Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. *** TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE PROVIDED *** Additional Information This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
