Intern, R&D
These three summer interns will work with a group of world-class scientists and engineers in developing a next-generation advanced battery technology, Li-Chalcogen (such as sulfur, selenium, and even oxygen) Battery, for enabling world electrification in the coming decades.

Basic Function of the Job

Work under the guidance of a group of world-class scientists and engineers and being part of the excitements inspired by scientific advancements and technological breakthroughs for developing next-generation advanced batteries, Li-Chalcogen, particularly, Li-S batteries.  Study and plan chemical experiments with solid scientific understanding and well-reasoned scientific hypothesis Carry out chemical experiments as planned, and make sure that the experiments are carried out soundly. Acquire data and perform data analysis. Prepare reports and make presentation, formally and informally, for internal and external evaluations. Keep good notebook records. Work with scientists, engineers, and management for IP Protection and IP Creation. Assists and supports Advanced Material’s R&D activities, as required and directed, in order to sustain research, technology development, product development, operational efficiency, and quality improvement.

Duties & Responsibilities

1.  Experiment & Process

Perform R&D activities including chemical experiments, such as battery technology development, and adhere to all activity schedules. Work instructions are explicitly followed. Contributes towards work instruction improvement. Write or update procedures as required and keep current on all work instructions. Raw material streams are properly applied and are reproducible by following the appropriate work instructions. Relevant and reliable data is collected, documented and organized into the appropriate format. Observe and report process/production equipment deviations and events.  Troubleshoot and repair equipment as necessary.  Enter R&D experiment, process and test data into the appropriate database. Maintain these databases as required by contracts or production Control system acceptance tests and the related commissioning startup checklists are accurate, complete and well organized. All required or assigned equipment or process maintenance logs are accurate, complete and well organized.

2.  Characterization

Perform R&D activities in characterizations with a group of advanced instrumentations. Relevant and reliable test data is collected, documented and organized into the appropriate format. Constantly strives to improve techniques in R&D experiments and sample preparation and characterization.

3.  Fabrication and Construction

Construction of process equipment for R&D and production is done per specification and direction. Operate, maintain, order and organize fabrication equipment as required. Effective troubleshooting and repair assistance is provided to meet project or process expectations. Clean and maintain equipment and work areas as required. Procedures and accepted practices are followed without deviation Expectations and timelines are met or exceeded without the sacrifice of safety and/or product quality. Communication is professional, timely, accurate and reliable.

4. Administrative

Department information systems, records, reports and metrics are accurate and generated on time. Responsible for maintaining a quality work environment housekeeping standards. Work area is kept clean and all safety procedures are followed. The effort required to keep all general areas clean and organized is appropriately shared. The effort required to keep all safety and general use supplies adequately stocked is appropriately shared. The effort required to keep assigned process areas clean and organized is appropriately shared. Adapts readily to changes in work caused by new requirements and/or situations. A high standard of ethics, professionalism, competency, and quality is established and maintained.

5.  Special Assignments

Support special projects as required. Report on projects and make recommendations to upper Management.

Education, Experience, and Requirements

Working toward a 4-year college degree or Graduate student Engineering and Science majors, for example, Chemistry Chemical Engineering Electrical Engineering Physics Material Sciences Due to ITAR compliance, this position requires candidates to be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident Alien, or Protected Individual per 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)

Working Conditions

Lab/manufacturing environment, clean room. Must be able to work with acids, radioactive materials and other toxic chemicals.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Safety Requirements
