Nuclear Fuel Methods Software Intern

TerraPower is seeking a highly motivated engineer with experience and interest in advanced nuclear reactors, metallic fuel performance, and computational science. In this role, the intern will directly contribute to the design and analysis methods supporting licensing efforts for the Natrium Reactor by documenting, testing, and improving the software used to simulate sodium fast reactor fuel and control pins during operation. The wide range of software quality assurance tasks will be conducted in accordance with industry and TerraPower standards and procedures.

Responsibilities

•         Rewrite existing fuel performance software documentation as reStructuredText (RST)

•         Document existing numerical model verifications and apply a variety of physical and mathematical concepts to create new cases

•         Identify and address code defects, bugs, and gaps in documentation and testing

•         Develop new software capabilities or improve existing ones

•         Provide support to experimental pin data analysis and qualification

•         Support the fuel methods team in the creation and assessment of Natrium pin models

Key Qualifications and Skills

•         Currently enrolled in an engineering degree program (MS or PhD preferable)

•         Strong technical writing skills – prior use of markup languages such as RST, HTML, XML, or LaTeX is preferable

•         Practical knowledge of mechanical and thermal material behaviors

•         Practical knowledge of numerical analysis, especially the finite element method

•         Experience with computer programming, especially object-oriented languages

•         Experience with collaborative software development, e.g., testing, documentation, and use of Git preferred

•         Experience with Abaqus or similar finite element analysis application preferred

•         Experience with fuel performance modeling code (BISON, FAST, MFUEL, etc.) preferred

•         Ability to work on tasks and teams that require a multi-disciplinary approach

•         Ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently during a given work week

•         Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems

Hourly rate range*

Graduate: $38.93 - $42.04

PhD: $42.30 - $49.82
