Intern Substation Engineering
**Job Title: Substation Engineering Intern** **Job Code: INT003** **Summary** Implements and coordinates the installation and energization of high voltage equipment associated with the corporation and its customers. **This is a 12-week summer internship program with tentative dates from May 18 to August 8, 2025, for students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2025. The role is based in Merrillville, IN and candidates must reside within 50 miles of Merrillville, IN to be eligible.** **Principal Duties and Responsibilities** + High consideration for those candidates with interpersonal skills which are effective in communication with internal and external customers. + Desire a quick learner with the willingness to remain flexible in various work assignments. + Develops and distributes electric substation operating orders, line operating orders, general orders and guidelines for all electric substations and lines. + Provides technical support and operational data to various operating, planning, andengineering groups to assist in the planning, installation, and operation of new equipment additions to the electric system with emphasis on future operational needs, system reliability, and safe switching practices. + Originates, distributes, and maintains single line diagrams for all electric substations and operating switching maps for all transmission lines. + Creates, provides, and maintains numerous technical information data bases associated with system operations and functions for and to all corporate electric operating and engineering groups. + Assigns equipment and line designations in and for electric substations, line switch, new and existing lines, and addresses special operating conditions within these areas. + Conducts frequent field inspections of construction sites to keep abreast of construction progress and maintains close affiliation with all field operating personnel. + Provides guidance to Dispatcher-Operators, addressing and resolving routine andemergency substation and line switching, electric system restoration, and outage evaluation issues. + Meets frequently with Planning, Engineering, Substation, Construction, Technical Service, Local Operating personnel, and customer groups to address current and future operational and construction issues. + Collecting and analyzing data and reviewing records. + Creating job order sketches using AutoCad. + Perform field measurements + Assemble data to create job order estimates + Successful candidate will start in summer 2025 + Safety consciousness required **Required Qualifications for Position** + Graduate from a four year ABET accredited program with a Bachelor of Science in EE, EET, or ECET + Understanding of basic engineering/technical theories and principles + Ability to read/interpret drawings/standards to analyze/solve problems + Knowledge of computer applications such as AutoCad, Word, Excel, Access + Knowledge of electric engineering + Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. + Valid Driver’s License + Ability to perform duties under close supervision + Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills. + Ability to effectively interact with customers, contractors, and various company operational and technical groups. Possess organizational and planning skills. + Possess Team Building Skills. **Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position** + Understanding of basic principles of project management + Experience in the electric utility industry + Knowledge of electric system and dispatching operational concepts. + Ability to use high voltage test equipment **This is a 12-week summer internship program with tentative dates from May 18 to August 8, 2025, for students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2025.
