Primary Role

Responsible for participating in assigned audits by evaluating and assessing American Water’s (AW) risks/controls to assure: 1) the effectiveness and efficiency of operations, 2) the reliability of financial reporting, 3) compliance with laws and regulations, and 4) the safeguarding of company assets. Also responsible for performing direct assistance assignments for external public accounting firm.

Key Accountabilities

•    Conduct risk-based audits/projects on a day-to-day basis ensuring quality results.  Includes assisting Seniors and Management with coordination, planning, fieldwork, drafting audit/project reports, and issue resolution.  
•    Assess risks/controls from an integrated business control framework and collaborate with management to mitigate risks. Supports risk/control awareness and self-assessment throughout AW.
•    Organized and proactive communication of progress and issues.
•    Perform substantive testing and financial statement tie outs on behalf and under the direction of AW’s external auditors. 

Knowledge/Skills

•    Basic to intermediate understanding of audit theory, planning, testing, and reporting concepts.  Understanding of process evaluation and review.
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills.
•    Interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on initiative, knowledge sharing, team building and decision making.
•    Strong analytical, systemic and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and in teams or effectively work independently.
•    SOX compliance evaluation and risks/controls assessment from an integrated business control framework, such as COSO and COBIT (IT governance framework and supporting toolset)
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel functionalities (i.e. pivot tables, Vlookup, etc.)
•    Prior public accounting, corporate and/or multi-subsidiary company experience a plus.
•    Project management experience or skills a plus.
•    Prior experience working in the utility industry a plus.
 

Experience/Education Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting or finance required.  Experience Minimum of 3 years overall business experience, of which minimum of 1 year within audit related fields is required Analyzing and documenting people and processes at the business unit and functional level Working in a team-based environment ERP/CRM and fixed asset systems such as SAP, Oracle/Hyperion, and PowerPlan  AuditBoard software is a plus. Travel Requirements Up to 5% throughout the United States Work Environment  Hybrid, in Camden, NJ office 3 days a week.
