This internship is a remote position within Colorado. Applicants must be local to Colorado.
This is a non-employee intern position. No benefits are available.
This is a temporary part-time internship (minimum 15 hours/week) and will exist for 6 months or less.
This position is not covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins)

About the Work Unit:
Antibiotic stewardship is the effort to measure and improve how antibiotics are prescribed by clinicians and used by patients. Improving antibiotic prescribing and use is critical to effectively treat infections, protect patients from harms caused by unnecessary antibiotic use, and combat antibiotic resistance. These programs improve the treatment of infections and reduce negative events and the overuse of antibiotics. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s (CDPHE) supports antibiotic stewardship by providing effective interventions, treatment guidelines, resources, and support for reporting antibiotic use to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).

Project Title: Antimicrobial Stewardship MPH Practicum
Project Description:
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Healthcare-Associated Infections/ Antimicrobial Resistance Program will offer practicum opportunities for MPH students who are interested in antimicrobial stewardship. Antimicrobial stewardship is the effort to measure and improve how antibiotics are prescribed to effectively treat infections, protect patients from harms caused by unnecessary antibiotic use, and combat antibiotic resistance. Students will engage in data-driven projects designed to improve the appropriate use of antibiotics across healthcare settings. This role is in a hybrid format and unpaid.
Useful skills:
Completed introductory courses in epidemiology and biostatistics
Data analysis:
+ Organizing and maintaining a database
+ Descriptive analysis
+ Proficiency in Excel and statistical software (R is preferred language)
+ Organizational skills
+ Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team
+ Interest in infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance, epidemiology
Smart Objectives:
+ Organize and maintain a database by the midpoint date of the practicum.
+ Describe a recent publication in antimicrobial stewardship at an Antimicrobial Stewardship Strategy Meeting by the end of the practicum.
+ Provide a descriptive analysis of a data set at the HAI/AR huddle by the end of the practicum.
Deliverables or outcomes:
+ Stewardship journal club at Antimicrobial Stewardship Strategy Meeting
+ Engagement in weekly stewardship meetings and check-ins
+ Presentation of summary of findings from descriptive analysis of data set at HAI/AR huddle (visualizations, summary, powerpoint presentation)
+ Clear documentation of methods to organize and transform data set

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates must be either:
Masters student enrolled in an accredited college or university s eeking a degree program in Public Health , or closely related fields.
OR
A recent masters graduate. Recently graduated means the individual should have attended an accredited college or university and have graduated with a masters degree in Public Health, within three calendar years (include transcripts).
College Transcripts:
If you are using education to qualify, a legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or a foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Transcripts must show the name of the school and that a degree was conferred. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. Failure to provide a transcript or foreign credential evaluation report may result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position.

+ If you will be using this internship for academic credit, a Signed Affiliation Agreement is required between CDPHE and your University.
