This position is an exciting opportunity for an Inventory Forester to become a part of the Western Timberlands Inventory & Planning (I&P) Team in Oregon. This team is responsible for forest inventory, harvest planning, GIS data management and mapping across Weyerhaeuser’s ownership of approximately 1.4 million acres in Oregon. This is a full-time, salary exempt position and reports to the OR I&P manager. The preferred office location will be in the North Willamette Valley, which could be Molalla, Lebanon or Dallas. This role allows employees to work from home up to 2 days/week, while reporting to an office or field location the rest of the week to provide support for and collaborate with team members.
*Background: *
The position is one of three Inventory Foresters on the Oregon Inventory & Planning team with a primary responsibility of supporting business needs on Weyerhaeuser’s Oregon ownership. The successful candidate will implement an Inventory program by managing contract timber cruisers and ensuring quality data is collected and processed. The candidate must possess strong organizational and communication skills and be able to work in both a team environment and individually. The candidate must also be able to adapt to changing priorities and learn new concepts and applications quickly, as well as travel to regional field offices when required.
Inventory Foresters are also responsible for maintaining the business database of records, which includes extensive GIS work. This role will be called upon to flow to work as needed while leveraging both skill sets.
*Key Functions:*
* Active participation in employee and contractor safety programs helping to identify improvement opportunities and ensuring everyone makes it home safely.
* Accountable for administering the inventory program across approximately 430,000 acres covering three of Weyerhaeuser’s tree farms.
* Responsible for updating Weyerhaeuser’s Forest Management System (FMS) with the highest quality data available.
* Manage the crew of contract timber cruisers in their daily work including creating cruise plans, performing check cruising, follow-up on improvement opportunities, managing invoice payment, and more.
* Update inventory database for pre- and post-harvest activities.
* Support corporate development and portfolio improvement efforts with accurate inventory.
* Assist in the annual budgeting process and effectively manage budget for assigned geography.
* Pursuing innovative solutions for alternative inventory methods (LiDAR, UAVs, Remote Sensing).
* Assist in administering satellite/high-flight photography contracts for depletion.
* Build and maintain effective partnerships with operations, planning, marketing and land use teams.
* Use GIS and other tools to provide maps, reports and analyses to internal customers.
* Support and actively participate in the design and implementation of standard Western Timberlands Forest inventory work processes.
* The position involves working alone in steep terrain under adverse weather conditions as well as office time appropriate to effectively manage the key functions identified.
* Bachelor’s degree or higher in Forestry or other associated Natural Resources, along with 2 or more years related experience; -Or- associate’s degree in forestry or other associated Natural Resources discipline, along with 4 years related experience.
* 2 or more years of related forest industry work experience.
* Forest mensuration training and experience.
* Working knowledge of forest operations, including harvesting and silvicultural methods.
* Working knowledge of current GIS systems commonly used in forest management.
* Ability to read and interpret aerial photos.
* Proficient understanding of forest sampling techniques and applicable statistics.
* Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software programs including Word and Excel.
* Strong interpersonal skills that facilitate customer satisfaction and effective teamwork.
* Ability to travel to regional field offices on occasion.
* May require limited overnight travel and daily work schedule flexibility.
*Preferred Qualifications:*
* Timber cruising experience.
* Contract administration experience.
* Experience working with SQL and/or Microsoft Access.
* GIS experience.
*Compensation:* This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $57,960 - $86,941 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 5% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.
