This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) in DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. Please see addtional information for more details. Responsibilities Form wax patterns by setting up and operating a wax injection machine. Prepare Slurries by mixing fine-grained aggregate and bonding agents. Does analysis of slurry daily. Assists in the operation of an induction furnace to melt the metal to be poured. Attach gates and risers to patterns and must be able to determine the proper size, length, and placement of those attachments. Use a variety of measuring tools and equipment to determine if finished castings conform to drawing specifications. Perform heat treat duties. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Investment Casting Maker ~ without more than normal supervision. . Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes (1) Use precision measuring equipment and evaluate work piece quality to ensure all castings conform to drawing requirements; (2) Apply knowledge on how to set up and operate wax injection machine, steam autoclave and gas oven; (3) Determine how many coatings of slurry are required for a part and make adjustments in slurry recipes; and (4)Recommend to die maker on required changes, and records of all procedures and techniques to be used for each part to be cast. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Requires continued use of both hands, and frequent standing, stooping, bending, reaching and lifting at shoulder level. Frequently lifts objects weighing over 75 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside in shop areas having adequate light, ventilation, and safety controls. Subject to heat from open vats and fumes from toxic acids, as well as burns, scalds and skin irritations. Required to wear protective clothing and equipment including rubber gloves, aprons, rubber boots and face shield or respirator. Subject to weather extremes. Term Appointment Not To Exceed - Position may be filled as a Term Appointment NTE 13 months. Term appointments may be extended beyond of six (6) years. Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a TERM appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position. No provisions to be converted to a permanent position.
