The Department

Strategic Advisers, LLC (SAI) is a registered investment advisor and wholly owned subsidiary of FMR LLC that provides investment management services to clients through Fidelity’s retail and institutional distribution channels. For more than 25 years, SAI has specialized in asset allocation solutions, as well as crafting methodologies for many of Fidelity’s investment planning tools to help investors reach their financial goals. With over $400 billion in assets under management, the SAI team of investment professionals builds and manages asset allocation portfolios for over one million customer accounts. The Portfolio Engineering (PE) function within SAI is responsible for the management, customization, and execution of individual client portfolios. Within the PE function, the Personalized Wealth Management team is focused on our clients’ most complex investment situations.

The Role

The Investment Manager will join the Personalized Wealth Management team in our San Francisco office, with occasional travel required to Fidelity offices in Boston, MA and Denver, CO. This person will play a meaningful role in SAI's next generation of sophisticated investment solutions which include custom multi-account investment management and asset location strategies. The role will combine a high degree of technical proficiency with investment expertise to build scalable solutions to solve complex investment problems and deliver greater personalization to clients. The role is primarily focused on providing tax-sensitive, customized management of multi-asset class portfolios for taxable individuals and trusts for Fidelity Wealth Services. You will learn and implement our overlay management strategies with a goal to improve after-tax returns while controlling risk.

Responsibilities

Portfolio Management

Manage individual client portfolios consistent with Strategic Advisers' investment philosophy and the unique personalization of each client portfolio. Implement investment strategies based on market movements, tax management opportunities, changes in model portfolio or investment choicesApply analytical and problem-solving skills to efficiently implement complex portfolio construction across multiple account registration types while being able to decipher and clearly understand the impacts on investment risk and return characteristicsDevelop a deep understanding of internal analyst and portfolio manager research on individual securities, ETFs, mutual funds, portfolio construction, and business cycle positioning to achieve superior pre- and after-tax returns consistent with the SAI’s investment philosophyCollaborate with the team to design, develop, and test new ideas to drive greater scale and personalization capabilities for the investment platformPrototype and provide technical design requirements to enable greater investment effectiveness across the Personalized Wealth Management teamMonitor and carry out fiduciary responsibilities with a high-level of integrity

Investment Planning

Provide personalized transition analysis for hypothetical scenarios and recommendations to clients on security transfers for charitable intentionsCollaborate with the team to design, develop, and test new ideas to drive greater personalization.Design and prototype new strategies for incorporating additional financial planning factors within portfolio managementCoordinate with Investment and Client-Facing partners to develop Portfolio Management Client ExperiencePresent detailed investment processes, philosophies, and capital market dynamics in front of larger groups including both internal colleagues and external clients

Qualifications

Experience/Education

Graduate degree preferred; degree or emphasis in Engineering/Computer Science/ Finance/Accounting/Economics subjects strongly preferredExisting or progress toward CFP credentialThree to seven years investment experience in research, portfolio management, trading or technology development in these fieldsHands on experience with financial planning and planning tools

Skills and Knowledge

Technical and programming skills including R, Python, Java, and SQL requiredFamiliarity with Business Intelligence tools such as Tableau or SpotfireAbility to work effectively on a collaborative team with a strong spirit of innovation, maintaining comfort in undefined environmentsAbility to operate in a fast-paced environment with excellent attention to detail, strong analytical skills, a creative approach to problem solving, and the ability to multi-taskUnderstanding of portfolio theory and quantitative portfolio construction techniques in a taxable environment

Location

San Francisco, CA

The base salary range for this position is $85,000-$179,000 per year.  

Placement in the range will vary based on job responsibilities and scope, geographic location, candidate’s relevant experience, and other factors.

Base salary is only part of the total compensation package. Depending on the position and eligibility requirements, the offer package may also include bonus or other variable compensation.
