Position Summary

The Inpatient Unit Director of Clinical Services is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders. The Inpatient Unit Director of Clinical Services directs and manages the interdisciplinary team in meeting the needs of the hospice patient and family in a manner consistent with the guidelines and policies of Compassus. S/he communicates patient information to the business office and promotes a positive working relationship with the family, physician, and other agencies. May serve as Program's Alternate Administrator, responsible for carrying out administrative and management functions and oversight in the absence of the Executive Director/Administrator. S/he is responsible for applying the rules and regulations of state and federal regulatory agencies and other certified agencies.


Position Specific Responsibilities

Facilitates the consultative process between the Medical Director and the interdisciplinary team (IDT).Assists in obtaining appropriate care orders and addressing patient needs when the attending physician is unavailable.Attends and leads IDT meetings, ensuring comprehensive discussions on patient care needs.Verifies the presence and engagement of all core team members.Ensures timely completion of required documentation, including patient re-certifications and the patient-centered plan of care.Documents outcomes and interventions, such as changes in level of care, medication adjustments, visit frequency, and emergency transportation needs.Participates in the development and updates of patient care policies and emergency procedures.Ensures compliance with state regulatory requirements for the supervision of nursing services.Ensures the availability of hospice services 24/7.Manages all aspects of the IDT, including scheduling, productivity, mentoring, pay practices, timekeeping, performance reviews, and colleague support.Demonstrates proficiency in required documentation within the patient's clinical record.Actively collaborates on Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities.Analyzes and reports on quality metrics, including Hospice Item Set, CAHPS, and symptom management outcomes.Supervises patient and family care in accordance with the plan of care, ensuring appropriateness, continuity, service, and quality.Manages the care for a caseload of patients as needed to accommodate changes in census.Participates in after-hours shifts, including primary and backup on-call duties.Serves as the administrator on call as scheduled.Oversees and directs the appropriate management of pharmacy, medical supplies, and DME orders/costs.Directly supervises up to 30 colleagues.Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, including hiring, training, performance appraisals, and conflict resolution.Makes or delegates post-admissions calls.Acts as the Executive Director as needed to cover absences.Performs other duties as assigned.


Education and/or Experience

Associate or Bachelor's degree in Nursing required.Minimum of three (3) years in healthcare required; preferably in a nursing facility, home health or hospice setting.Experience in leadership or management strongly preferred.Experience with Electronic Medical Record systems a strong plus.


Skills

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, team members, investors, and external parties. Strong written and verbal communications.Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces integrated healthcare at home philosophy.


Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

Active and unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the state(s) of employment required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: The demands of this role necessitate a team member to effectively perform essential functions. Adaptations can be made to accommodate team members with disabilities. Regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity are fundamental, along with the ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. In a healthcare setting, exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and conditions typical to the field is expected. Routine use of standard medical equipment and tools associated with clinical care is essential.
