Iron Butcher Supervisor

As the Iron Butcher Supervisor, you will be a vital member at one of our Alaskan processing facilities responsible for ensuring the efficient and safe processing of fish, maintaining high-quality standards, meeting production targets and to oversee the overall operations in the butcher area. The position will assist and train the crew for all operations, make sure they understand how to use all Emergency Stops and do job specific training for each employee on how to safely operate their equipment.   The supervisor also plays a crucial role in quality control, ensuring that the processed fish meets company standards and SBS company requirements.  

 Essential Functions/Qualifications  

The responsibilities of the position include the following:  

Responsible for training employees prior to work on equipment.   Ensure the production line starts on time, make sure all employees are wearing proper PPE.   Instruct employees about current production information like lot code, number of fish running, pounds per hour to achieve, quality of fish, employees concern and areas that needs to address.   Responsible for break schedules, sending employees on break in a timely manner and getting them back on the line on time.   Must meet set volume of produced products with excellent quality.   Strong knowledge of how to identify problems and can correct them as they occur.   Work closely with QA to ensure high quality of produced products.   Responsible in the operation of the following areas, as assigned: Iron butcher machines, bull wheel, slime line, graders, gutters, ice totes, slacking pad, tote dumpers.   Supervise employees in species sorting, header/gutter output accuracy, straightening fish, accurate grade/size and head cuts, totes made per hour, totes dumped per hour, checking cavity of fish is clean, hours per slacking, tote tagging deck area – fish pickup and utilizing production crews.   Responsible for production clean-up to maintain the cleanliness of production area.  Monitor and evaluate leads job performance.   Responsible for the safety of the crew.   Other duties are to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Mechanical Knowledge: A deep understanding of mechanical systems, components, and tools. Welding and Fabrication: Proficiency in welding and fabrication techniques to repair and maintain equipment. Hydraulics and Pneumatics: Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems used in fish processing machinery. Equipment Maintenance: Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain various types of processing equipment. Safety Awareness: Adherence to safety regulations and procedures, especially when working with heavy machinery and sharp tools. 

Interpersonal  

Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve mechanical issues efficiently. Communication: Effective communication skills to interact with other plant personnel and equipment manufacturers. Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with other maintenance and production staff. Time Management: Efficient time management skills to meet production deadlines. Adaptability: Willingness to adapt to changing work environments and equipment. 

 Education and Experience  

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred but not required. 1-2 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experienced in multiple mechanical skills, including knowledge of millwright, hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing, building maintenance, fabricating and welding processes  Position requires driven machinery certifications such as a forklift, expeditor truck, or flatbed truck which in turn requires a valid driver’s license.  Previous experience working in the Seafood or Manufacturing industry is preferred, not required.  

Work Environment and Schedule   

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Position requires onsite presence at our Alaska Processing Facility, and the ability to travel, spending a significant amount of time during the season at our various locations and processing facilities in Alaska.  

Physical Demands   

This role is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Employees are frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
