The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is seeking an Engineering Technician III within the Traffic Signals, Street Lighting & ITS Division. This position performs advanced technical engineering support or engineering-related assignments and applies scientific and technical knowledge across a spectrum of engineering design, construction, complex permit processing, asset management, and complex plan and design review and/or planning functions related to PBOT’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) communications network infrastructure and roadside technology devices.
About Signals, Street Lighting, and Intelligent Transportation Systems Division:
This division specifically plans, designs, builds, and maintains the city's traffic signals, street lighting systems, and ITS systems, which consist of approximately 1,150 traffic signals, 55,000 street lights, 70 rectangular rapid flash beacons, 170 school beacons, radar feedback signs, CCTV cameras, Variable Message Signs, Communication equipment and various other electrical elements throughout the City of Portland.
What you’ll get to do:
+ Manage small ITS related projects in construction of signal interconnect communication, traffic monitoring cameras, and miscellaneous roadside technology devices.
+ Manage National Joint Utilities Notifications (NJUNS) Pole Attachment permits related to Signal Interconnect Communication
+ Monitor and report on annual Oregon Public Utility Commission (OPUC) inspection reports
+ Manage and update ITS infrastructure asset list and annual condition reports
+ Manage and update PBOT’s ITS communication infrastructure map using various mapping tools
+ Support ITS related network computer server and field devices firmware upgrades
+ Coordinate projects with other bureau staff, City staff, and external agencies
+ Coordinate the purchase, payments, maintenance, repair and monitoring of PBOT’s ITS communication network and network field devices
+ Assist on ITS related project design and construction inspections
+ Analyze and report on project results and progress
+ Occasionally lead/manage ITS Engineering Interns (Trainee).

+ Experience applying engineering terminology, practices, and basic principles.
+ Experience applying standard engineering mathematics such as: using algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statics.
+ Experience managing various construction-oriented projects and permits and the ability to implement new departmental programs and practices as well as oversee and improve existing ones.
+ Experience operating and utilizing computer software related to engineering, drafting, mapping, measuring, surveying, and/or electronic tools such as: e-builder, SAP, Arc-GIS, OSPInsight, Visio, Excel, Micro-Station.
+ Experience interpreting & utilizing technical documents related to engineering such as: maps, engineering drawings, construction plans and specifications, QA/QC submittals, and as-built drawings.
