The City of Stockton's Public Works Department is seeking to fill a Janitor vacancy in the Operations and Maintenance division. This position reports to the Facilities Maintenance section, whose mission is to provide cost effective, reliable maintenance, janitorial and logistical support services to facilitate the delivery of safe, comfortable, high quality services in City facilities. Under general supervision, the Janitor performs routine custodial and cleaning duties and performs related work as assigned. Schedule - The successful candidate will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule. In the 9/80 schedule employees work eight 9-hour days in a 2-week period, one 8-hour day and then receive one day off every other week. This means that every other weekend will be a three-day weekend. Working hours are 5:00 p.m. – 2:30 a.m. on the 9-hour days and 5:00 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. on the 8-hour day. To provide continuous janitorial services, candidate must be available for the following schedule: Tuesday through Saturday, with a Sunday/Monday weekend. This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list, the open list, or a combination of both. This list may be used to fill future vacancies. Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass an extensive Police Department background investigation, which will include fingerprinting. Veteran's Preference: This position is eligible to receive five (5) Veteran's Preference Points for entrance into the Civil Service. Veteran's Preference will not be granted on the promotional list. If you believe you may qualify for Veteran's Preference, a DD-214 Member 4 copy indicating at least 181 consecutive days of service must be received in the Human Resources office (see supplemental questionnaire for details in submitting DD-214 copy) by the final filing deadline. Under general supervision, performs routine custodial and cleaning duties in municipal buildings and adjacent grounds; performs related work as assigned. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is the working level class in the janitorial series. Work is performed without immediate supervision in an assigned area. This class is distinguished from Senior Janitor in that the latter is the lead supervisory level in this series, responsible for assigning and reviewing the work of janitorial staff. Other Requirements: + Must possess a valid California driver's license. + Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to maneuver equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. + Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to work evening shifts, standby, and overtime as necessary.
