The Radiation Technician II is responsible for production within the Radiation Technology group of STERIS AST. The Radiation Technician II is proficient in executing protocol/dose mapping, understands machine faults/breakdowns and assists maintenance with repairs. This role has extensive knowledge in the set-up and processing of source loading tests (gamma modality), and assists training the Radiation Technician I on all tasks and responsibilities. The Radiation Technician II oversees the receiving, configuration, prepping, product prioritizing (managing same day, priority, and routine turn times), planning (cycle times, dose ranges, product-to-product compatibility within the cell), irradiator operation, radiation safety, product installation / calculation for reinstallation / removal, dose mapping, dosimeter reading, and product shipping. The Radiation Technician II processes a vast range of products such as pharmaceuticals, medical/surgical devices, tissue samples, viruses (for R&D purposes), nuclear reactor components, soil, and a variety of other requests from our Customers.
What you will do with us:1. Protects Customer product by assuring proper processing and handling according to operating procedures; monitors process cycle times and control systems to ensure operation within Customer, quality, regulatory and internal company specifications; assessing process capability and executing test runs if deemed necessary; reviews and completes all appropriate processing documentation.
2. Operates a Gamma or dual modality E-Beam/X-Ray Irradiator; understands machine faults/breakdowns and assists maintenance with repairs; understands and can troubleshoot HMI/PLC product tracking system (E-Beam/X-Ray); plans installations (turn tables, position, product specifics), calculates exposure times (gamma), or determines appropriate processing parameters/treatment conditions (E-Beam/X-Ray); responds to process and equipment alarm conditions and acting within operational and safety guidelines.
3. Executes required testing of irradiator on a recurring basis to ensure it remains in it’s validated state; assessing impact of part changes or repairs and performing required testing/requalification to ensure irradiator has returned to validated state (E-Beam/X-Ray).
4. Strives for continuous improvement by analyzing new or alternative ways to improve operations; incorporates staff recommendations into analysis; responds to audit activities in a constructive manner and uses findings to improve operations where possible.
5. Determines run scheduling and prioritization for shift based on the needs of the customer, meeting turn times, and maximizing efficiency of processing. Balances processing of customer requests with equipment qualification testing, R&D projects, and process improvements. Works closely with department planner to determine specifics of customer requests, and additional clarification or details needed for optimization of testing to meet customer’s needs.
6. Refers major repairs to shift Supervision or Maintenance personnel to keep the machine running at peak performance. Works with machine vendor (Mevex) for troubleshooting/resolution of software or mechanical issues that cannot be addressed by on-site maintenance staff (E-Beam/X-Ray).
7. Maintains mechanical and technical skills, knowledge and abilities by attending workshops, reviewing trade publications, and participates in training Radiation Technicians.
8. Is proficient in Microsoft Suite programs, using Word to generate test plans, and Excel for data documentation and analysis. Is comfortable using computers for communication through email and IM, picture editing programs, and custom built data management systems such as ODMS and PTMS (E-Beam/X-Ray).
9. Supports and can perform in all areas of the receiving process by preparing product for irradiation (orientation changing, repackaging, bundling), Customer data entry into the management system, and provides guidance to Rad. Tech I and warehousing staff on the most effective way to orientate or reorganize product to achieve the Customers dose. Verifies Customer paperwork and receiving information against what was entered into the operations management system.

Education Degree Associate's Degree in Science You will be a great fit if you can:1. A minimum two (2) years as a Radiation Technician / Gamma Operator or equivalent laboratory or sterilization work experience.
2. Subject to passing Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) required background check.
2. Ability to work independently under general guidelines and supervision.
3. Requires effective interpersonal skills as demonstrated through prior experience.
4. Requires computer literacy to include word processing, spreadsheet and software capabilities.
5. Above average organizing, analyzing and a minimum of Level 3 math skills (ratios, proportions, basic algebra) to determine organizational, Customer, and regulatory problems to formulate corrective action plans; attention to detail.
6. Ability to adapt to changing duties and responsibilities.
7. Normal hearing range sufficient to hear alarms.
