Position Announcement Position Details Proposed Start Date 09/04/2023 Working Title Joint Institute Adjunct Instructor: Composition II Department 270101 - EAS MCECS Dean Maseeh College Position Number D97646 Representation Position Summary Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept The Portland Institute Nanjing is a joint project of Portland State University and the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications in Nanjing, China. Joint Institutes are a recognized form of international cooperation in China. Chinese students attend in Nanjing where they engage in a curriculum with elements designed and taught by both partners. The curriculum has defined articulation points after two or three years of the undergraduate program that give the opportunity for students to transfer to PSU and to obtain degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from both universities. Position Summary The Portland Institute Nanjing is seeking part-time Adjunct Instructors with the ability to teach Composition II (ELL) both online and in person to undergraduate first year university students in Nanjing. The course is taught on a semester schedule. The period of instruction is approximately 16 weeks starting September 4 and ending December 23, 2023. Semester dates are September 4, 2023 until January 19, 2024. Class sizes are 30.
The ideal candidate will be able to teach both online and for an in-person period of four weeks or longer in Nanjing from October 9, 2023 onwards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teach Composition II (ELL) for the Joint Institute undergraduate program Teach between 1-3 classes for the fall semester Follow the provided program curriculum and materials Use a variety of appropriate methods of engagement and assessment Use appropriate teaching strategies Evaluate student learning and modify instructional methods and strategies as appropriate to meet diverse student needs. Use appropriate technology to teach classes and communicate with students Collaborate with colleagues at PSU and NJUPT Participate in regular faculty meetings
Special working conditions:
For online instruction, due to the time difference, all classes are held Sunday – Thursday, approximately 5pm – 9pm, depending on daylight savings time Remote communication with China partners is similarly constrained by the time difference For travel to China, PSU will assist with and cover the costs of the visa for China PSU will also provide round trip airfare and accommodation on the NJUPT campus

Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in TESOL or related field 2-3 years ELL teaching experience in higher education Experience in online instruction Preferred Qualifications PhD or EdD TESOL certification Available for travel to China for a minimum of four weeks during the semester Key Cultural Competencies • Creates an environment that acknowledges, encourages and celebrates differences.
