Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept The Portland Institute Nanjing is a joint education program of Portland State University and the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications in Nanjing, China. Joint Institutes are a recognized form of international cooperation in China. Chinese students attend in China where they engage in a curriculum with elements designed and taught by both partners. The curriculum has defined articulation points after two and three years of undergraduate study that give the opportunity for students to transfer to PSU and to obtain degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from both universities. Position Summary The Portland Institute Nanjing is seeking a team of Instructors to teach in our summer English program in China. Prior to beginning their formal classes in the Fall semester, first-year students attend a four-week intensive program of English instruction designed to improve their academic readiness for PSU classes taught in English.
The program runs 4.5 days a week with classes held Monday – Friday (4 hours/day, 2 hrs on Fridays). Dates of instruction are August 7 – Sept 1, 2023. We will hold induction meetings in Nanjing in the week prior to the start of instruction, and a review meeting after instruction concludes. Each Instructor will be supported by a PSU-recruited teaching assistant.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Teach speaking, listening and culture classes for Joint Institute Summer Program (a total of 64 hours) Follow the provided program curriculum and materials Use appropriate technology to teach classes and communicate with students Work with the teaching assistant to coordinate lesson plans and class activities Use a variety of appropriate teaching strategies and methods of engagement and assessment Evaluate student learning and modify instructional methods and strategies as appropriate to meet diverse student needs. Prepare additional materials as needed Coordinate with other teaching staff in the Summer Program Attend program meetings (a total of 4) Attend program meetings Adjust to changes to the program that might occur

Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree and/or extensive experience teaching academic English to speakers of other languages Experience of using a variety of instructional tools to engage students Preferred Qualifications Previous experience teaching in a college or university setting Previous experience teaching English speaking and listening courses Key Cultural Competencies • Creates an environment that acknowledges, encourages and celebrates differences.

Compensation The starting salary range for this position will be between $3500 and $5500, dependent upon the knowledge, experience, skills and abilities of the chosen candidate, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR. Travel Requirements Applicants must hold a passport with a minimum of 6 months validity. Applicants must be able to travel to China between the dates of August 3-5 and remain in China until September 2.


Compensation, allowances and other arrangements Salary depending on experience. Includes in-class teaching time, course preparation, and attending program meetings. Per diem allowance of $25 per day in addition to salary. PSU will make all travel arrangements for round trip flights. PSU will handle visa applications and cover all costs.
